Advice For Applying

Advice for applying for jobs

In this section you will find some general advice for applying for jobs on careers.gov.je

Curriculum vitae (CV)+

  1. You should create a CV when applying for jobs in the Jersey Public Service.
  2. This is a short written summary of your career, qualifications and education. You can upload your most recent CV to careers.gov.je.
  3. Your CV should preferably be in PDF or Word format, and no more than 2 MB in size.
  4. Important: Make sure you upload your documents in an accepted file type. DOCX, PDF, Image and Text file types are accepted, whereas unfortunately, MSG, PPT and XLS file types are not accepted.
  5. Older versions of Word/PDF files will need to be updated to the newer versions to be uploaded to the site.

Cover letter+

  1. As well as a CV, you should create a Cover letter when applying for jobs in the Jersey Public Service.
  2. This is a letter to support your CV and application. It should be set out in a formal letter style, with your name, address, and date of application, and should be addressed to the Hiring Manager.
  3. This is your opportunity to introduce yourself to the Hiring Manager and set out why you would like to be considered for the role.
  4. Your cover letter should be tailored to suit the job that you are applying for. It is recommended that you update the cover letter for each new application.
  5. Check the Job Description and look at what the job requires, and tailor your cover letter to match your skills and knowledge to the job criteria.
  6. For example: if the Job Description requires a mature and confident approach, you could include an example of a difficult situation you overcame in a previous job, introducing your skills and experience. This demonstrates to the Hiring Manager that you meet the criteria and may be a suitable candidate.
  7. Your cover letter should preferably be in PDF or Word format, and no more than 2 MB in size.
  8. Important: Make sure you upload your documents in an accepted file type. DOCX, PDF, Image and Text file types are accepted, whereas unfortunately, MSG, PPT and XLS file types are not accepted.

  4. If you have started an application, do not go through the job application process again as this will create a duplicate application.
  5. All mandatory fields are annotated with an asterisk (*). These must be completed before you can Save or Submit. If a mandatory field has been not been completed, you will be prompted to complete the field with a red box around the missing field.
