Giving something back

Employees from the Law Officers' Department actively contribute to the community through various volunteering initiatives, making a meaningful impact across the Island.

As part of the Jersey Public Service, employees are entitled to up to 22 hours of paid volunteer leave each year, allowing everyone in the Department to support local charities.

Civil Division

The Civil Division is a dynamic and diverse team, made up of four specialist areas: Advice, Commercial and Contentious, Safeguarding, and Property. Together, we provide expert legal support that ensures the Government of Jersey’s decisions are well-informed, shaping the Island’s future every day.

Advice team - providing insightful legal counsel
Our Advice Team offers critical legal guidance on a wide range of topics that impact the Island at home and abroad. From advising on international treaties, trade and immigration to interpreting complex legislation and human rights, we play a key role in ensuring that public service departments have access to high quality legal advice. Whether it’s reviewing draft legislation or advising on European law, our team plays an important part in shaping the laws that protect our community. Here, your expertise truly makes a difference.

Commercial and Contentious team - navigating complex legal challenges
The Commercial and Contentious Team deals with the challenges that arise in today’s fast-paced world, providing advice on contractual disputes, employment and discrimination claims, data protection, tax, and more. Whether it’s navigating general civil litigation or representing Ministers in judicial review cases, this team is central to ensuring fairness and justice in both commercial and contentious issues. With a wide scope of work, you’ll tackle interesting, varied cases where your skills can have a tangible impact.

Safeguarding team - protecting those who need it most
The Safeguarding Team works at the heart of Jersey’s child protection and vulnerable adult services. We provide legal support to the Children’s Service to ensure the care and protection of children in the Island, and we work closely with Health and Care Jersey to safeguard vulnerable adults. Additionally, we assist the Attorney General with the functions of the Hague Convention on International Child Abduction. In this role, you’ll be directly involved in shaping the future of vulnerable children and adults, making a profound difference to people’s lives.

Property team - protecting Jersey’s land and assets
The Property Team provides expert legal advice on all property-related matters, from conveyancing to advising on land ownership, leases, and public sector property matters. We represent both the Crown and the public sector, enabling the protection of Jersey’s assets for the benefit of all Islanders. Here, you’ll be working on high-profile cases that have a lasting impact on the Island’s infrastructure and economy.

Criminal Division

Comprising three dynamic teams—the Criminal Courts Team, the Economic Crime and Confiscation Unit (ECCU), and the Mutual Legal Assistance Team—our division works relentlessly to uphold the rule of law, tackle crime, and safeguard the integrity of the Island’s legal system. Criminal Courts team - prosecuting with purpose
The Criminal Courts team is at the forefront of criminal justice in Jersey. We prosecute cases across the Magistrate’s and Youth Courts, the Royal Court, and the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division), and provide expert legal advice to key agencies including the States of Jersey Police, the Honorary Police, Customs, and various Government regulatory departments. In this team, your work will directly shape the outcomes of important criminal cases, ensuring justice is served in every corner of our community.

Economic Crime and Confiscation Unit (ECCU) - leading the fight against financial crime
Since its inception in October 2017, the ECCU has been dedicated to keeping Jersey at the forefront of the global fight against international financial crime and money laundering. The team works tirelessly to investigate and prosecute serious and complex economic crime, ensuring that the Island remains a safe, secure place to do business. Here, your expertise will directly impact the integrity of Jersey’s financial system, making a real difference in maintaining its global reputation for transparency and security.

Mutual Legal Assistance team - global reach, local impact
The Mutual Legal Assistance Team plays a crucial role in facilitating international cooperation in criminal matters. We handle requests for assistance from jurisdictions worldwide, helping to bring criminals to justice, wherever they may be. The Operations team plays a key role in ensuring adherence to the Public Finances Manual and the Lexcel Standards, and our behind-the-scenes efforts are crucial to achieving the Department’s objectives. Our work has been recognised by the Lexcel assessor as providing “exceptional levels of operational support” to the legal advisers. From managing resources to streamlining processes, we ensure that the legal advisers and teams can focus on what matters most: delivering top-tier legal services.
