Job Overview

We are on a mission to recruit new tutors for Adult and Community Education (ACE). Adult education teachers are important advocates for instilling skills and confidence in adults who wish to engage in further learning, advance skills to gain employment or simply improve wellbeing and social inclusion.

 

We are particularly interested in applications from people experienced in teaching Crochet, Floristry, Japanese Cookery, Bicycle Maintenance, Upholstery and British Sign Language  but would also welcome applications from those with expertise in other areas.

 

We run adult education classes currently at Highlands College and at the Philip Mourant Centre in Trinity. These roles are offered on a flexible and zero hours basis.

 

The successful applicant(s) will have excellent verbal and communication skills as well as the creativity to plan and deliver classes on the islands. It is not essential that the applicant holds a teaching qualification but a willingness to attend a 2 day train the trainer course is essential as a minimum.

Job Purpose

Responsible for managing the learning process including developing materials and teaching for a specific group within the Adult Education Programme.

Job Specific Outcomes

1. To set out clear aims and objectives for any course and provide a course description.

 

2. To prepare appropriate learning materials and resources and deliver the course employing a range of educational methods and approaches.

 

3. To employ a range of teaching strategies which recognise and value adult learners’ experience, knowledge, abilities and learning styles.

 

4. To support students to reach their goals and regularly evaluate progress with individuals and the group.

 

5. To prepare fully for each session, e.g. materials, room layout etc.

 

6. To maintain records of attendance and carry out other administrative tasks as required.

 

7. To undertake induction and other training as deemed necessary by the Line Manager.

 

8. Contribute to team/Department meetings including course monitoring to ensure objectives are being met.

 

9. Assist in ensuring the quality of the curriculum provision to meet internal and external standards through course meetings and contributing to course planning and review.

 

10. Assist in ensuring the college environment meets health and safety and security requirements.

 

11. Recognise the personal welfare needs of students, and initiate appropriate actions or interventions.

 

12. Any other duties required by the senior team for the successful achievement of the job purpose. 13. Be compliant with the college’s safeguarding policies.

Qualifications

 

  • Essential: A requisite teaching qualification. Minimum requirement - C&G 7300-01 Introduction to Trainer Skills (or a willingness to work towards this) 

 

  • Desirable: A preparedness to adhere to Continual Professional Development requirement 

 

Knowledge 

 

  • Essential: Demonstrable evidence of secure subject knowledge and skills relevant to their field.

 

Technical / Work-based Skills

 

  • Essential: Good organisational, communication and interpersonal skills and a high level of initiative.

 

  • Desirable: Experience of teaching is desirable but not essential if tutors can demonstrate an understanding of what to take into account when teaching; an ability to plan a course and individual lessons; knowledge of a range of teaching methods and materials; and an understanding of the characteristics of adult learners. 

 

General Skills/Attributes

 

  • Essential: An ability to communicate fluently and effectively. An ability to work flexibly as part of a team. An ability to motivate and inspire learners. 

 

Experience

 

  • Essential: Evidence of relevant academic, industrial or commercial experience. 

 

  • Desirable: Experience of working with adults in a training, coaching or supportive role.

  • Essential: An understanding of, and commitment to, safeguarding for all. 

 

  • Desirable: Foundation Safeguarding (Level 1) qualified. 

 

Core Accountabilities, Attributes and Behaviour Indicators

Tutors are responsible for the preparation, effective delivery and evaluation of course content. Tutors will adapt the content of each course according to the differing needs of each class/participant, recognising that students/participants will come from a range of backgrounds and abilities. Tutors may be required to develop new tutoring techniques to make a course more accessible and inclusive.

 

When tutoring informal community groups, the tutor will need to be particularly flexible in responding to the learning needs of the group.

 

Tutors will support learners to identify further learning needs and to provide accurate information about progression.

 

Tutors undertake research, devise a syllabus for the course, plan individual lessons and organise course materials as well as determining appropriate methodology.

 

Tutors are responsible for responding to a variety of learning styles and participants’ needs, and for developing innovative and appropriate approaches to meeting those needs.

 

Tutors are required to develop and employ a range of strategies for effective communication and negotiation.
