Job Overview

Hautlieu School has an opportunity for a motivated Temporary Caretaker to join our school to ensure a safe, welcoming environment is maintained for all who visit the school.  The post will require the successful candidate to work for a minimum of 5 hours on Sundays, 08:30 – 13:30.  In addition, there will also be the opportunity to work additional hours on Saturdays as and when required by the school.

You will need to be a hands-on individual who can help maintain the school systems/procedures.  The fixed term contract will run for 12 months starting from Sunday 3rd January 2026.  Full training will be provided to the successful candidate.

Job Purpose

  • Responsible for the security of the school premises and its contents when the Caretaker and/or Site Manager are not in attendance.
  • Responsible for organising repairs and repairing damage or faults and carry out minor maintenance construction, including carpentry.
  • To assist in the supervision and deployment of staff, and the oversight of any contractors / tradesmen on the school premises and to call out any engineer / tradesman when incidents occur and liaise with them in the absence of the Caretaker and/or Site Manager.
  • To liaise with community users and be responsible for all activities in reference to community use whilst on duty.
  • To assist in the monitoring and the effectiveness of the cleaning contractor. 

Principal Accountabilities

  • Together with the other Site Staff have joint responsibility for:
  • The security of the premises internal, external and all its contents including the Car Park, all windows, doors and gates on the school site.
  • Safe Car Park supervision, when required (e.g. Parents Evenings).
  • Supervision of contract cleaners and liaison with Site Manager and Contract Cleaning Manager.
  • General cleaning of the school site, when required.
  • Together with the Site Manager, inspect the building and plan general maintenance.
  • Carry out repair work on a daily basis.
  • Monitor of the specifications and standards of the cleaning throughout the campus.
  • Placing orders for minor works materials for construction of repair work using the minor works procedures set out by Building and Maintenance Section at the Department of Children, Young People, Education and Skills.
  • In the absence of the Caretaker and Site Manager, operate the computerised Building Management System.
  • Liaison with clubs and associations during community use.
  • Deliveries within and outside the school.
  • Carry out postal duties and weekly banking.
  • Setting up for parent evening, prize giving and other school events.
  • General porterage duties, moving furniture etc.
  • Inform Site Manager of overtime hours worked by caretaker assistants and cleaning staff.
  • Report and if possible, resolve any Health and Safety issues.
  • In the absence of the Caretaker and Site Manager, operate the CCTV Security System.
  • Together with the Site Manager, distribute staff keys and cut student locker keys.
  • Carry out small carpentry construction and maintenance works.
  • Undertake any other task as may be reasonably requested by the Head teacher. 

Knowledge and Skill

Experience in working with security and working with different systems.

Proven supervisory skills.

Excellent organisational skills and ability to prioritise.

Understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Law and be willing to take on further training in Health and safety. 

Competent in dealing with the general public.

A good team member and able to work on own initiative.

Ability to maintain a good working relationship with everyone and work with teachers, parents, students, outside tradesmen and community users of the school.

Proven Carpenter and Joiner skills.

Be willing to undertake appropriate training as needed, for example the First Aid at Work Certificate.
