- Job Role: Grade 4 Staff Nurse to Grade 5 development opportunity for a Bed Manager within the Hospital setting to support our Operations Team.
- Contract: Permanent
- Hours – 7 days per week cover, Early and Late shifts including Long Days.
Are you a proactive and organised professional with a passion for efficient operations? We are offering a unique development opportunity for a Grade 4 Staff Nurse into a Grade 5 role in Bed Management within our hospital setting. As a key part of the Operational Team, this role will directly support the effective and seamless coordination of patient flow across the hospital, ensuring the highest quality of care and service delivery.
The successful candidate will be motivated, have strong organisational skills and experience in patient flow or bed management. You should have:
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Proficiency in electronic health systems (experience with Maxims is advantageous).
- Knowledge of infection control guidelines and commitment to maintaining safe patient environments.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to service excellence.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience in patient flow or bed management.

Job Purpose
This role operates across a range of clinical areas within the acute and community services. You will plan and deliver an effective and competent level of care, be fully aware of the needs of the patients and drive a high standard of patient care.
You will be required to support and deputise for the ward sister/charge nurse, by taking charge of the clinical area, ensuring excellent nursing care provision and the effective management of staff. Supervision, support and mentoring of junior staff, students and HCA’s will be expected within the purpose of the role.
Working collaboratively with colleagues across own and other departments to ensure the continuity in patient care, acting as a role model for colleagues, patients, and relatives.

- Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the guidelines of the NMC Code and apply these to maintain trust and credibility with patients, carers, and colleagues.
- Complies with all legislative, HCS policy, procedures and professional practices are in line with professional codes and statutory responsibilities. Ensures confidentiality is adhered to in accordance with professional codes of practice and will abide by the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018.
- Participates in process of appraisal alongside appraisee. Keeps fully up to date with developments within own professional discipline and maintain an awareness of developments in clinical and nursing practice and shares clinical knowledge and experience.
- Co-ordinates the care for specified individual patients or patient groups by consistently compiling care plans which meet identified treatment goals resulting in high quality patient care. Maintains contemporaneous nursing records of care delivered via digital and non-digital systems.
- Follows Health and Safety policy and procedures within the clinical environment including COSHH, fire and safe handling. May be required to participate in the audit process within the clinical area.
- Participates in the budget management of the area by using resources wisely which in turn leads to a “value for money” culture. When required, maintains the E-Roster ensuring that there is effective and safe staffing for the department, which may include redeployment of staff through the organisation. Ensures accuracy in the Safecare acuity tool when reporting daily activity

- Facilitates and supports the patient journey through the organisation including timely discharge. Establishes good communication with all disciplines and agencies who are involved in the patients care. Where required, will liaise with community providers surrounding patients care always including the patient/family/carer.
- Works alongside the multidisciplinary team daily. Reports and escalates concerns regarding risks. Ensures all appropriate safeguards are in place, always advocating for the patient. Liaises with appropriate agencies when there are safeguarding concerns regarding actual/potential risks to patients and/or their dependents. Shall be aware of and comply with all safeguarding policies and procedures. Ensures that Significant Restriction of Liberty (SRoL) are followed in line with legislation. Promotes a culture of openness and transparency within the department, enabling staff to feel safe to speak up to advocate for patient’s needs.
- Delivers safe, evidenced based care to patients, ensuring that the patients and relatives voice is heard throughout. Embeds agreed quality standards within the department , supported by senior colleagues within the area.
- Complies with all Infection Prevention and Control (IPaC) polices and has courage to challenge poor practice. Participates in the undertaking of IPaC audits as requested by line manager.

Budgetary Responsibility
- Efficient Bed Management: Effectively manage the utilisation of beds within the acute setting to maximise operational efficiency
- Emergency Department Coordination: Collaborate closely with the Emergency Department (ED) to ensure timely patient transfers from ED to the wards, aiming for a transfer within four hours of admission
- Admissions Coordination: Oversee and coordinate all admissions from the Emergency Department, clinics, and external organisations to ensure seamless patient flow
- Bed Management System Oversight: Maintain an up-to-date bed management function on Maxims, ensuring the organisation has real-time knowledge of bed availability to manage fluctuations in demand, clinical priorities, and emergency admissions effectively
- Stakeholder Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with Clinical Site Managers, Emergency Department, ITU Care Group Lead Nurses, and ward teams to foster collaboration and communication
- Central Point of Contact: Serve as the primary point of contact for all bed requirements across the organisation
Experience
- Meeting Participation: Attend daily site coordinator bed management meetings and other relevant meetings as required to support operational decision-making
- Inter-Hospital Transfers and Communication: Ensure the effective transition and communication of patient details for inter-hospital transfers and repatriations, maintaining a high standard of care
- Collaboration with Ward Staff: Build relationships with Ward Clerks and other relevant administrative, clinical, and management staff, maintaining excellent communication channels and a high level of customer service
- Issue Escalation: Escalate any concerns or issues to the Operations Manager promptly to ensure timely resolution
- Proficiency in Electronic Systems: Maintain proficiency in all relevant electronic systems related to patient data and undertake additional training as required
- Infection Control Compliance: Liaise with the Infection Prevention and Control team, adhering to their guidelines to ensure patients are managed safely and effectively
