Job Overview
Rouge Bouillon School are looking for a caretaker with a strong practical skillset to organise and carry out the maintenance of a large town primary school. T
he ideal candidate will be organised and self-motivated, enjoy interacting with children and a large staff and be able to prioritise jobs for both them self and an assistant caretaker who we intend to also appoint.
They will have practical experience of building work or property maintenance, knowing what they can tackle themselves and what would require an outside contractor.
There may be the possibility for the successful candidate to rent accommodation on-site in a newly renovated school cottage should they choose.

Job Purpose
To ensure the security, care and cleanliness of the School and to carry out minor maintenance repairs and construction.
To manage and supervise the daily cleaning of the school
To be responsible for health and safety throughout the school buildings and the outside areas, maintaining records as required.
To act as a fire marshal in the event of a fire alarm
To carry out light maintenance
To be responsible for the security of the school premises and contents.
To report and act upon any damage or faults.
To enable and distribute deliveries made to school
To call out and liaise with tradesmen, and manage an assistant caretaker if one is available.
To organise the maintenance of school vehicles
To assist the Headteacher and his staff in any reasonable requests.
Statutory Responsibilities
Checking the security and safety/maintenance of the premises, together with the contents. This includes the unlocking and locking of the school.
To inspect the building, fixtures, fittings, furniture and equipment on a regular basis, and to carry out any maintenance, repairs or construction that may be necessary, including woodwork.
To organise the maintenance and upkeep of the exterior school grounds, including the watering of plants, trimming of hedges and plants and engaging specialists to ensure that any trees remain in a safe condition.
To carry out regular Health and Safety checks of premises and equipment recording concerns and actions in the current school Health and Safety management systems. Complete and maintain Risk Assessments for all identified areas in line with States of Jersey Health and Safety Operational Policies.
To keep the school and grounds clean and some general cleaning duties.
The supervision and deployment of cleaning staff, and the oversight of contract cleaning and any tradesman on the premises.
The direction and supervision of an assistant caretaker if one is available.
General porterage duties, including packing and unpacking of parcels and crates, delivering and collecting items of equipment, moving furniture and equipment and messenger duties.
Ensure appropriate stock of cleaning materials, equipment and timber is kept and ordering them as required.
Operation of school heating system and the ordering of fuel and the maintenance of correct levels.

To organise the maintenance of any school vehicles through the approved Government department, and drive children on school trips as required.
To maintain the school inventory of furniture, resources and equipment updating on an annual basis.
To purchase fixtures, fittings and resources necessary for the maintenance of the school within the allocated budget. Maintaining accurate records of expenditure for accounting purposes.
Deputise as the School Crossing Patrol person in the absence of the post holder.
General supervision of car parking areas and drop off / pick up points, particularly for school functions.
Act as School Fire Officer and ensure that one fire drill is carried out .
Collection and disposal of litter, weeding, sweeping and cleaning etc.
Unblocking drains as required (or organising professionals to do so if needed).
To carry out daily and weekly work schedules and any other reasonable requests as agreed with the Headteacher.
The caretaker can often be called out of working hours to deal with breach of security or incidents on school premises. Such instances would normally be recognised with time in lieu, in agreement with the headteacher.
Working hours may need to be flexible on occasion in order to support school events outside normal working hours, as directed by the headteacher, with reasonable notice.
A minibus test is required to be taken by all caretakers.
Pay is in accordance with Manual Workers Joint Council Agreement at Grade 5.

You will have contact with: Teachers, teaching assistants, school administrators, caretaker’s assistant, children, parents, cleaners, outside contractors, visitors, After School and Holiday Club in relation to the running of and daily utilisation of the school. Children, youths and adults when checking the security of the school during the evenings and over the weekends. Honorary and States police when reporting instances of vandalism or disturbances. People under the influence of drink whilst checking the security of the school.
Person specification
The caretaker is required to have proven organisational, supervisory and handyman skills and the ability to prioritise.
A clean driving licence is essential.
Education min-bus driving certificate. (To cover the transportation of children and staff).
Knowledge of current Health and Safety procedures (training can be provided).
An understanding of property maintenance.
A strong and proven set of practical and building skills.
Ability to set and monitor standards of cleaning and experience in ordering materials.
The ability to work on own initiative, but also as a member of a team and the person-management skills to effectively direct an assistant.
A firm and resilient character.
Physically fit.
Good communication skills.
Ability to maintain a good working relationship with teachers, parents and children, youth workers and outside agencies using the school premises.
Basic IT knowledge.
