Job Overview
Join Health and Care Jersey as a Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine for our August 2025 intake. This is an exciting opportunity for doctors looking to advance their career in emergency medicine or gain valuable experience. As a Emergency Medicine Clinical Fellow, you will be a vital member of the team. Your role will include assessing and treating patients with a variety or conditions while working alongside a full medical and nursing team. There are also opportunities to get involved in aero-medical transfers and contribute to the development of clinical guidelines and pathways.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assessment and management of patients presenting to the department
- Involvement in aero-medical transfers to UK tertiary centres
- Participation in clinical audit, research, and the development of clinical guidelines

The Post
The successful candidate will be able to combine service commitment with significant professional development through participation in Clinical Fellow teaching in the Emergency Department as well Clinical Fellows monthly Training days run by the hospital post-graduate centre as well as participation in Clinical Governance programs. There is also an opportunity to train and undertake medical flight transfers.
Duties
Emergency Medicine
-To work as part of the emergency medicine junior doctor workforce team
-See and treat both major and minor injuries and illness in both adults and children
-Refer to the relevant specialty when required
-Learn and undertake ED procedures and skills
-Participate in resuscitation and trauma calls
The rota within emergency medicine equates to 1 in 3 weekends & 1 in 15 nights on average.
Shift patterns are:
Early 08:00-18:00
Mid 10:00-20:00
Late 14:00-23:00
Night 22:00-08:30
Flight Transfer
Patients being transferred acutely to tertiary centres such as the Cardiothoracic Unit in Oxford and to the Neurosurgical Unit in Southampton for further specialist treatment are accompanied by a doctor and a trained nurse. Courses in in-flight transfers are provided, and post holders will be on a rota of 1:7 for such activity during normal working hours and at weekends, if rostered on-call. Accompanying transfers that take place out of hours will be on a voluntary basis and will command additional remuneration.
Additional Professional Development
Medical students from Southampton University are attached for 8-week rotations in their final year. Clinical Fellow post holders have enjoyed interaction with these enthusiastic trainees and have provided bedside teaching in addition to that provided by Consultants and Middle Grade Doctors. Clinical Fellows have organised mock OSCE in the 7th and 8th weeks of their attachment in preparation for their final examinations. This has been a mutually beneficial exercise. The Education Centre is a shared facility for the Health and Care Jersey department and is equipped with a newly built Clinical Skills Lab which has assisted Clinical Fellows in self-learning, particularly in procedural work and optimising their cardio-respiratory resuscitation skills, and in teaching their more junior colleagues both medical students and nursing staff. The medical library is well stocked with books, journals and computer facilities, including internet access. The following is an example schedule of a typical working week. The duties of the post holder are expected to be flexibly worked, as inevitably a number of activities run concurrently.
The Specialty
The Emergency Department
Emergency Department in Jersey General Hospital is the only one on the Island, we see in excess of 45,000 patients per year, 25% of our attendances are children. We are a Trauma Unit part of the Wessex Trauma Network. We run a well-established ultrasound service in the department and are developing a regional blocks service in the ED. There is a 24/7 middle grade presence on the shop floor and ED Consultants are on the shop floor 8am-10pm Monday to Friday and 10am-4pm Saturday and Sunday with on call support outside of these hours. There is a well-run weekly SHO multidisciplinary ED teaching focused on emergency presentations. An interest in audit and clinical governance is also encouraged.

Medicine in Jersey is fully age and specialty integrated. There are 3 medical wards, Plemont, Rozel and Corbiere. A 5-bedded Enhanced Care Area is sited on AAU and there is a separate intensive care unit led by intensivists. There is also an Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit led by the Acute Medicine Department. There is a 25 bed Acute Assessment Unit.
SAS doctors are responsible for the day-to-day management of their patients on the wards with the help of clinical fellows, FY1 or FY2 doctor whom they closely supervise.
On call, the SAS doctor is responsible for seeing patients referred by the Emergency Department and reviewing patients admitted to the AAU by GPs in conjunction with the Acute Medicine team. A core responsibility of the Medicine Care Group is the provision of a safe acute medical service. The Care Group always provides named Consultant supervision for non-Consultants and ensures that prompt review and treatment is provided for acute medical emergencies referred by General Practitioners or the Emergency Department.
Consultants are responsible for producing and updating guidelines for the management of acute medical emergencies in their specialist area.

There are 63 medical beds. 12-20 acute medical admissions on average during each 24-hour period on call within a range of approximately 6-24. There are approximately 4,500 medical admissions annually.

In addition to outpatient clinics and 3 general medical wards containing 63 beds, the Medical Service Care Group is involved in the management of several specialist facilities. These include:
