Job Overview
We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Histopathologist and Cytopathologist to join our established and supportive Pathology Department. The department comprises three consultant pathologists who share responsibilities equally, with workload allocation overseen by the Head of Department.
Core Duties
The post-holder will participate in all aspects of diagnostic histopathology and cytopathology. On average, one week in three, the successful candidate will undertake daily surgical specimen dissection (cut-up), supported by experienced and trained laboratory staff. While assistance is provided, the consultant retains overall responsibility for the cut-up undertaken and will normally report the cases dissected during that week.
Laboratory staff process cytological specimens, biopsies, and selected straightforward surgical specimens. These cases are allocated to the consultant team for reporting on a rotational basis. FNA and EBUS clinics are supported by trained laboratory staff, and no diagnostic reporting is undertaken by biomedical scientists.
There is no requirement to report cervical cytology.
Reporting Standards and Facilities
The consultant will be expected to maintain turnaround times in line with locally agreed targets and national standards, and to report in accordance with Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) guidelines, including minimum data set reporting and accurate clinical coding.
A wide range of immunohistochemical and specialist tinctorial techniques is available on site. Immunofluorescence, ER, PR and HER2 assessments, Oncotype DX testing, and selected molecular investigations are currently undertaken by accredited mainland UK laboratories.
Mortuary and Post-mortem Work
On a one-in-three rota, the post-holder will have responsibility for oversight of the mortuary and for performing and reporting post-mortem examinations, including cases for the Deputy Viscount (Coroner).
Excluded from this responsibility are: forensic cases (typically managed by a visiting consultant forensic pathologist), cases requiring an independent pathologist, and paediatric post-mortems
The successful candidate must be confident, professional, and credible in providing evidence at inquests.
