Job Overview

Health and Care Jersey is now looking to employ a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with a Special interest in Knee Surgery. This is an opportunity to join a dynamic, forward looking Trauma and Orthopaedic department where change and evolution of patient care is a priority. With a focus of work/life balance for staff and care focused healthcare for patients, Jersey benefits from a health system separate to the constraints and targets of the NHS.

Working in Jersey provides candidates with an enhanced remuneration framework compared to the NHS reflected in the salary scale, as well as, benefiting from very attractive income tax rates.

This new appointment allows expansion of the Jersey lower limb service to meet increasing demands and to provide a more comprehensive service to the population of Jersey.

The Lower Limb Service is currently provided by a combination of: Mr Dunlop and Mr Haddad, Jersey T&O Consultants, Mr West who as Medical Director contributes on a part -time basis to the department, in addition to two Advanced Care practitioners who have a physiotherapy background. It is envisaged this appointment will enhance and develop the soft tissue knee service in particular. The successful applicant will also be required to cover general trauma out of hours and must be comfortable and competent with managing acute Trauma Orthopaedics for Adults and Paediatric patients.

For an informal discussion on this role, please contract Patrick Armstrong - p.armstrong@health.gov.je.

Job Purpose

The Jersey Orthopaedic department currently comprises 3 full time consultants and one part time. The new appointment will be in addition to the current compliment. It is anticipated that the on-call commitment will be 1:4. Business cases are being submitted for further expansion to support a 5th appointment with a reduction of on-call frequency to 1:5.

Applicants are required to be on the Specialist Register for Trauma and Orthopaedics.

It is essential that the applicant has a willingness to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service. Jersey General Hospital provides healthcare for just over 100,000 people. With an ageing population, the department is busy meeting the ever-increasing demands placed upon it.

Statutory Responsibilities

The successful candidate will join the existing team of surgeons, allowing them to focus more on their sub-specialist interests of hip and foot and ankle surgeries. They will be expected to undertake arthroplasty surgery, both primary and revision procedures. All surgeons within the department have existing relationships with UK centres where more complex cases can be discussed or referred to and the successful candidate would be expected to develop similar links with the support of the department.

In addition to contributing to the Lower Limb service the successful applicant will also be required to contribute to the general trauma out of hours, providing support to the Middle Grade tier and managing acute Trauma Orthopaedics for Adults and Paediatric patients.

They will be expected to participate in departmental Governance and Audit activities as well as teaching and training of junior staff and medical students.

They will be responsible for ensuring active participation in CME, attending meetings as appropriate and participating in local MDT/ Trauma meetings.

On-call rota

The on-call rota is currently on a 1:4 basis, with 24 hour on calls Monday to Thursday with weekends running from Friday to Sunday inclusive.

The Surgical care Group is committed to further expansion of the Orthopaedic Consultant tier and funding has been agreed for a fifth T&O Consultant with the expectation that the on-call frequency will therefore become 1:5 and the department will move to a Consultant of the Week model when the Consultant on-call will be relieved of all other commitments to concentrate on the trauma patients.

Job Specific Outcomes 1 of 2

At present, the Department functions as four Consultant teams supported by five Middle Grade doctors. Mr Ziad Haddad provides a general orthopaedic service and has an interest in foot and ankle surgery and paediatrics. Mr Colin Dunlop provides a general orthopaedic service with a special interest in Hip and Knee surgery.  Mr Patrick Armstrong (Clinical Lead) provides an upper limb service with a specialist Hand service provided by a visiting consultant.

This post is the fourth post.

Mr Simon West is the Medical Director and contributes to the Lower limb service on a part-time basis. Our Spinal service is currently under review and the ultimate model is yet to be finalised, it is currently supported by a visiting team from Taunton.

Job Specific Outcomes 2 of 2

Primary bone tumours and scoliosis patients are referred to specialist centres on the UK Mainland.  An out patient elective paediatric orthopaedic service is provided in Jersey but children requiring surgery are referred to both the Paediatric Orthopaedic Service in Southampton and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The musculoskeletal trauma service is varied and while we try to provide as comprehensive a service as possible we do transfer complex fractures and polytrauma to mainland centres when necessary. The Department is currently responsible for the immediate management of  head injuries, chest injuries and burns to the limbs. Patients requiring emergency neurosurgical intervention or cardiothoracic intervention are transferred to Southampton. Burns are transferred to Salisbury.

The main Operating Theatre Department comprises five operating theatres, one of which is reserved as an emergency theatre in which the Trauma List takes place each day.

Across the Government of Jersey and public service, the scope of our work means our people enjoy a wider range of opportunities – to work with recognised experts across teams, learn new skills and develop their careers. We actively look to recruit people from different backgrounds, with diverse perspectives. This creates a richer, more varied environment, where you’re exposed to new ideas, new ways of thinking and new opportunities, so you can develop an exciting and rewarding career.
