Job Overview

The States of Jersey is now looking to employ a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with a Special interest in Trauma Surgery.

This new appointment allows a fundamental change to our trauma service to meet increasing demands and to provide a more comprehensive service to the population of Jersey. We will be able to move to a Consultant of the week model for trauma. This appointment will have a pivotal role in developing this way of working in Jersey. The Trauma Service is currently provided by a combination of: Mr Dunlop (Specialist interest Hip and Knee), Mr Haddad (Specialist interest lower limb and Paediatrics) and Mr Armstrong (Specialist interest Upper Limb) who are substantive Jersey T&O Consultants. A fourth Consultant is to start soon on a fixed term basis who will have a specialist interest in knee surgery. This post will be a 5th post and is being appointed to taking a leading role in manging our acute trauma patients as the numbers of patients who have complex needs both surgically and medically increases. Both the 4th and 5th posts will be advertised on a substantive basis in due course .

Job Purpose

Trauma Service Responsibilities

The successful candidate will join the existing team of surgeons and their main focus will be on developing the standards of management of our trauma patients. A sub-specialist interest may developed in other areas of trauma and orthopaedics by mutual agreement and in line with the needs of the service.

 

General Responsibilities

They will be expected to participate in departmental Governance and Audit activities as well as teaching and training of junior staff and medical students. They will be responsible for ensuring active participation in CME, attending meetings as appropriate and participating in local MDT/ Trauma meetings. 

On Call Rota

The on-call rota is currently on a 1:4 basis, with 24 hour on calls Monday to Thursday with weekends running from Friday to Sunday inclusive. With the appointment of this post we will move to a Consultant of the week model on a 1:5 basis, most likely running from Friday to Friday.

At present, the Department functions as four Consultant teams supported by five Middle Grade doctors. Mr Ziad Haddad provides a general orthopaedic service and has an interest in foot and ankle surgery and paediatrics. Mr Colin Dunlop provides a general orthopaedic service with a special interest in Hip and Knee surgery.  Mr Patrick Armstrong (Clinical Lead) provides an upper limb service with a specialist Hand service provided by a visiting consultant.

Mr Simon West is the Medical Director and contributes to the Lower limb service on a part-time basis. Our Spinal service is currently under review and the ultimate model is yet to be finalised, it is currently supported by a visiting team from Taunton.

 

Job Specific Outcomes 2 of 2

Primary bone tumours and scoliosis patients are referred to specialist centres on the UK Mainland.  An out patient elective paediatric orthopaedic service is provided in Jersey but children requiring surgery are referred to both the Paediatric Orthopaedic Service in Southampton and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The musculoskeletal trauma service is varied and while we try to provide as comprehensive a service as possible we do transfer complex fractures and polytrauma to mainland centres when necessary. The Department is currently responsible for the immediate management of  head injuries, chest injuries and burns to the limbs. Patients requiring emergency neurosurgical intervention or cardiothoracic intervention are transferred to Southampton. Burns are transferred to Salisbury.

 

The main Operating Theatre Department comprises five operating theatres, one of which is reserved as an emergency theatre in which the Trauma List takes place each day.
