Job Overview

We are looking for a Consultant to join our department to provide emergency and routine care in ENT surgery for the population of Jersey, as part of a multidisciplinary team. The successful applicant will become the main provider of Head & Neck cancer surgery on island.

The successful candidate will be part of a team of 5 clinicians responsible for the care of all acute and non-acute patients referred to the ENT department at Jersey General Hospital. The candidate will be taking up a newly created post in addition to the current 3 Consultants and 1 Associate Specialist. Duties will include attendance at fixed outpatient clinics, fixed operating theatre sessions (plus additional emergency sessions as required) and ward rounds as needed to monitor care of elective and acute in-patients. The candidate will share a 1:4 on-call commitment with non-prospective cover, which is remunerated through time off in-lieu. The candidate will also be expected to attend and contribute to the weekly Skin Cancer and Head & Neck MDTs as well as a video-link SSMDT with Head and Neck team at Southampton Hospital.

Private practice is welcomed. Because there is only one hospital on Island, consultants are permitted - and encouraged - to operate on their private patients at the hospital during their timetabled operating sessions, so long as they meet their requirement for public operating as detailed on their job plan.  The private activity is unfunded by HCJ and this is factored to into the total PA allocation in the consultant’s annual job plan.

The successful applicant will also be required to contribute to the teaching of nursing staff, elective medical students and any resident doctors spending time in the department. There will be the opportunity for undertaking Educational Supervision to foundation Years doctors for those who have done the necessary educational training.

On Call Rota

The post holder will be required to participate in a 1:4 on–call rota. There is currently no middle tier of on-call for ENT, meaning that the Consultants and Associate Specialist are first on-call, liaising directly with the well-staffed ED department, as well as taking GP referrals. Slots are pre-allocated in OPD clinics to allow for the review of emergency patients during working hours. Jersey operates on a different system of remuneration for on-call whereby sessions are allocated in lieu of contracted commitments rather than financial remuneration, with the 1:4 on-call attracting 2 programmed activities. There is a possibility the role may change to a 1-5 with investment in the workforce.
