Job Overview
We're ideally looking for someone with experience in the construction industry and who holds a HGV license. It should be noted that this role is physically demanding at times, and so a decent level of fitness is required.
We will consider candidates with the right experience and work ethic, in assisting them to get their HGV license if they currently do not have it.
Our works will take place all over the island, including coastal scenarios, where an understanding of tidal movements is beneficial.

Job Purpose
To provide professional driver/labourer services using HGV vehicles fitted to carry out infrastructure maintenance and/or municipal cleaning duties in areas administered by the Department.
Job Specific Outcomes
• Be responsible for the safe and efficient driving of a Heavy Goods Vehicle on the Island’s roads in accordance with the Road Traffic Laws.
• Carry out manual labouring work as directed related to infrastructure maintenance and/or municipal cleaning duties in areas administered by the Department.
• Operate equipment in use by the Department for which the post holder has been trained and is competent to use, some of which require the post holder to hold certification or specific licences, e.g. site plant such as 360 machines up to 5 tonne max. weight, forklift, telehandler, M.E.W.P.s, heavy trailer use etc.
• Carry out Driver/Operator maintenance safety checks to manufacturer’s recommendations on both the base vehicle and the specialist equipment fitted to it,or being used in the course of labouring duties.
• When work priorities require it, drive conventional vehicles for which the post holder is licenced (HGV - Group C, MGV – Group C1, Cars/ Light Commercial – Group B).
• Demonstrate the ability to cause a minimum of inconvenience as possible to all service users and members of the general public whilst driving or in the course of labouring duties.
• Some work will be in areas assessed as coming under the Department’s definition of Underground / Convined Space environments where there is a managed risk requiring specialised personal protective equipment and enhanced emergency exit procedures
• Provide rapid and effective assistance during extreme weather events and other emergencies. You will be expected to work with other operational teams and work additional hours if required.
Qualifications
Full driving licence, with Large/Heavy Goods Vehicle category (Group C,E), demonstrable experience of competent and safe driving of a Large/Heavy Goods Vehicle on local roads.
Knowledge
Knowledge and application of good Health & Safety practices in ensuring the safe separation of work areas from colleagues and the general public when operating specialised equipment. Demonstrable local knowledge of the Island’s roads and access restrictions for Large Goods Vehicles.
Technical Work Based Skills
Ability to quickly assess conditions, plan a system of work accordingly and change that system should conditions so dictate ensuring always that systems of work are carried out safely
General skills / attributes
Assess site conditions, scope of task and decide on work method, assess the risks associated with each and every activity and plan a safe system of work e.g. working area assessment when operating a truck mounted hydraulic loader/crane.
Experience
The post holder requires substantial experience in; Driving HGV vehicle and civil engineering labouring duties
