Job Overview

The States Greffe is seeking two enthusiastic and dynamic Education and Outreach Officers to join our Digital and Public Engagement team. These roles are integral to promoting political education, increasing public understanding of the States Assembly, and fostering community engagement across all age groups.

 

You will develop and deliver politically impartial educational resources, workshops, and outreach programs tailored to schools, youth groups, and the wider community. The successful candidates will be creative communicators with experience in education or public engagement, committed to making the work of the States Assembly accessible and engaging to diverse audiences.

Job Purpose

To engage and inform all Islanders about the work of the States Assembly – Jersey’s elected parliament, by supporting the delivery of Education and Outreach programmes and activities, including the Jersey Youth Parliament.

 

To take an active role in delivering wider initiatives and support the development of high civic engagement in Jersey, demonstrating a measurable positive impact on achieving the outcomes and objectives set out in the Digital and Public Engagement Strategy.

Statutory Responsibilities

Active engagement, participation and compliance with any other statutory responsibilities applicable to the role, as amended from time to time.


This role is politically restricted. The jobholder is not permitted to undertake political activity involving standing for election to the States or as a Parish Constable, or publicly supporting someone who is standing for election, or playing a public part in any political matter.

Job Specific Outcomes 1 of 2

1.Assist with the creation of schemes of learning and lesson plans, for use across both Primary and Secondary School education, to improve the implementation of the Citizenship Curriculum and the teaching of political education.


2. Develop presentations and resources that can be used in a range of formal and informal learning environments, to help Islanders understand and see the relevance of the States Assembly.


3. Deliver high-quality and engaging educational lessons and workshops to Islanders of all ages, including students and Jersey’s adult population, some of whom may have barriers to engagement including language, disabilities or neurodiversity.


4. Assist with the delivery of school visits and tours in the States Chamber, pop-up stands in the community, in-person and online events and visits to schools, to encourage civic engagement in Jersey.


5. Deliver CPD training sessions to teaching staff to help embed political learning across all subjects in the curriculum.


6. Support the work of the Jersey Youth Parliament by carrying out research for members and creating and facilitating sessions.


7. Establish and maintain professional working relationships with a broad range of local organisations and groups to better understand their communities and provide appropriate channels for them to engage and provide feedback on the work of the States Assembly, including Scrutiny Panels and Committees.


8. Liaise with States Members and Officers in Scrutiny and Constituency Support to pro-vide advice and support with Education and Outreach opportunities and to facilitate meaningful connections that will positively impact civic engagement.


9. Research industry trends, including learnings from other sectors and jurisdictions, with a commitment to sharing knowledge with the wider Digital and Public Engagement team to support continuing professional development and best practice.


10. Record audience participation and capture feedback from all Education and Outreach activities, recommending appropriate adjustments to the Education or Outreach Man-agers to continually improve service provision.


11. Work collaboratively and flexibly as part of the Digital and Public Engagement Team, and the States Greffe, supporting colleagues and coordinating engagement projects that align with the overarching strategies of the department and team. There is an expectation that this role will include work outside of core office hours, which may be considered anti-social.

Qualifications

Essential Desirable

Undergraduate degree (or equivalent experience), ideally in a relevant subject, that demonstrates strong written English, project management and analytical skills.

A valid First Aid at Work qualification.

 

Knowledge

Essential Desirable

Interest in Jersey’s political system and culture.

 

Demonstrable experience of working in an educational/ outreach setting.

 

Knowledge of Jersey’s political system and culture.

 

Familiarity with Jersey’s machinery of Government and constitutional arrangements.

 

Broad knowledge of the legislation, policies and procedures and services of the Government of Jersey.

 

Working knowledge of the Jersey Curriculum and other relevant learning programmes/strategies.

As the States Assembly is a tri-lingual parliament, French and Jèrriais language skills would be an advantage, as would knowledge of the languages widely spoken in Jersey (Portuguese, Polish and Romanian).
