Job Purpose

The Foot Health Practitioner is an autonomous, non-registered clinical practitioner who delivers skilled foot health assessment and treatment within an agreed scope of practice under podiatry professional governance. The role provides preventative, maintenance and risk-based foot health care across outpatient, inpatient, community and domiciliary settings, with a particular contribution to diabetic foot pathways and patients with long-term conditions. The post holder exercises clinical judgement within defined protocols, manages risk, recognises deterioration and escalates appropriately to registered clinicians. The role contributes directly to patient safety, prevention of avoidable deterioration, service capacity, and system efficiency, supporting timely access to podiatry services for patients referred from general practice, hospital specialties and diabetes services.

This role is politically restricted. The jobholder is not permitted to undertake political activity involving standing for election to the States or as a Parish Constable or publicly supporting someone who is standing for election or playing a public part in any political manner. 

Qualifications

Essential

RQF Level 4 Foot Health Practitioner qualification, or equivalent recognised foot health qualification, or demonstrable equivalent competence with commitment to achieve RQF Level 4 within an agreed timeframe. 

Desirable

Additional training in wound care, diabetes, vascular awareness, or phlebotomy. 

Knowledge

Essential

Knowledge of foot health pathology, diabetic foot risk, infection control principles, safeguarding requirements, clinical governance, scope of practice and escalation processes. 

Desirable

Knowledge of multidisciplinary diabetic foot pathways and community and hospital referral processes. 

Technical Work Based Skills

Essential

Competence in scalpel debridement of callosities within agreed protocols. Ability to work autonomously within scope, including the appropriate use of wound care. Accurate use of electronic patient record systems. Ability to work across clinic, ward, community and domiciliary settings. Driving licence.

Diserable

Phlebotomy competence or willingness to undertake training. Competence in advanced wound dressing selection within protocol. Additional advice for patients receiving supplementary podiatric care, including the use of orthoses. 

General skills / attributes

Essential

Effective communication skills. Empathy and ability to reassure patients. Good organisational and time management skills. Ability to recognise limits of competence and escalate appropriately. Professional, flexible and patient-focused approach.

Desirable

Experience contributing to service improvement, audit activity or pathway development. 

Experience

Essential

Patient-facing clinical experience in a healthcare or foot health setting, including autonomous working within scope and experience of multidisciplinary team environments. 

Desirable

Experience supporting people with diabetes or long-term conditions. Experience across clinic, ward and community environments. 

Safeguarding

The post holder will have regular contact with adults who may be at risk. The role requires the ability to recognise safeguarding concerns, act in accordance with organisational policy, and escalate concerns appropriately.
