Job Overview
To maintain the grounds and gardens of Government House to a high standard for the Lieutenant-Governor, his family and all guests at Government House.
Applications are invited for a unique and exciting opportunity to work at the heart of Island life supporting the work of the Lieutenant-Governor from experienced gardeners with a comprehensive knowledge of horticulture.
The wide-ranging and varied work of the Office of the Lieutenant-Governor will bring the post holder into contact with a very broad and diverse range of people and situations which will often require exercising a degree of discretion, confidence and initiative. Post holder maybe required to work weekends and public holidays.

Maintain the designated areas of Government House grounds and gardens for which allocated responsibility. Plant; weed; prune and irrigate.
Job Specific Outcomes 2 of 2
Operate machines, tools and equipment appropriate to the work in hand (wearing and using the appropriate safety equipment and clothing); after having received appropriate training, being licensed or suitably qualified.
Ensure that machines, tools, equipment and clothing are cleaned after use and returned promptly to store and that all breakages and unserviceable items are reported without delay to the Head Gardener.
Adhere to all relevant Health & Safety rules and practices.
Be familiar with the provisions of Safety Data Sheets before applying fertilizer and chemicals. Spraying can only be carried out by holders of Chemical Spraying certificates.
Assist other gardening and Government House staff as required and perform tasks (which may not be directly related to gardening) as directed by the Head Gardener or the Chief of Staff.
Qualifications
• Possession of a full current driving licence
• Educated to GCSE Level standard or equivalent
Desirable
• Chainsaw operator's certificate
• First Aid at Work (St John Ambulance or equivalent)
Knowledge
-
Comprehensive knowledge of horticulture
- Thorough knowledge of fertilizers and chemicals used for gardening purposes
Technical Work Based Skills
- An understanding and awareness of Health and Safety.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Outlook i.e. emails etc.
General skills / attributes
- Comprehensive gardening and manual labour skills
- Ability to follow instructions accurately ad to work on own initiative when necessary
- Ability to confidently communicate with people
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Experience
Minimum 2 years experience in gardening role
Personal Attributes
Appointees to this role will be required to adhere to and perform their duties in line with the standards identified in the States of Jersey tier 5 core accountabilities attributes and behaviour indicators.
