Job Overview
Hautlieu School is a high achieving co-educational school catering for 14-19 year old students with recognised academic ability.
We are seeking to appoint a skilled Head of History to lead our strong and creative team from the 1st September 2025. The post would be suitable for an individual who already has middle leadership experience, or an outstanding teacher who is ready to take the next step in their career. The successful applicant must be educated to degree level in History or a related field and have experience in being able to deliver GCSE and A Level courses.

Job Purpose
The primary responsibility of the post is to:
- Lead, manage and administer the teaching and learning of GCSE and A Level History.
- Manage and administer the examination entries and any specification developments for all Department courses.
- Lead the development and implementation of learning resources within the Department.
- Work closely with the Head Faculty to lead the areas of assessment, tracking and recording to ensure consistency across the faculty and to promote improved student learning.
- Lead developments across the faculty in the areas of homework and engaging students in learning beyond the classroom.
The line manager for this post is Faculty Leader of Humanities.
Job Specification Outcomes
In addition to the work defined in “The Teachers Task” (Appendix 1) the post-holder will:
- Plan and teach GCSE and A Level History to achieve the highest academic standards and provide outstanding learning opportunities.
- Ensure learning and teaching is consistently of a high standard in the History Department.
- Manage and develop all learning resources within the History Department to ensure high levels of student engagement and achievement.
- Lead curriculum planning within the History Department and maintain departmental and faculty policies, schemes of work and handbooks.
- Assist in the organisation of internal and external examinations and non-examined assessments.
- Be willing to undertake appropriate professional development and training, as needed, to stay at the leading edge of learning and teaching. E.g. Subject developments and new qualifications or specifications.
- Assist in organising visits to both local and UK events (e.g. lectures/industrial visits) and provide opportunities for students to enrich their knowledge and demonstrate their skills through extra-curricular activities.
- Ensure the profile of all courses is raised both within the school and the wider community through networking, frequent media releases and internal announcements in consultation with the Head of Faculty.
- Lead departmental meetings and ensure they are student and CPD focused.
- Undertake regular reviews of students’ academic progress across all staff in the department, provide support as required and give regular acknowledgement of students’ success (e.g. displays, individual praise, school announcements).
- Undertake regular self-reviews of teaching practice and accompanying documentation as determined by the evaluation process of the school and the department.
- Assist in advising new students on the suitability of courses and assist in co-ordinating the transition between GCSE and A Level including liaison with partner schools.
- Ensure all health and safety regulations are adhered to both on and off site and that a regular programme for the inspection and maintenance of equipment is provided.
- Lead department policy and practice in the areas of assessment, tracking and reporting. Ensure the Department sets all students individual targets and ensure teachers support students in all areas of their learning to meet or exceed minimum expected grades.
- Work closely with the Head of Faculty to lead developments across the faculty in the areas of homework, extension work and learning beyond the classroom; including the use of online learning tools to engage students.
- Using information from teachers, track and report to the Head of Faculty on student progress and performance within History.
- Assist in developing curriculum links with universities and other organisations to promote History in the school.
- Participate fully in the academic guidance programme by acting as an Academic Mentor to a group of students.
- Contribute to written reviews, reports and references for students as appropriate and have due regard for School policies on reference writing and GDPR.
- Contribute to staff task teams as appropriate.
- Maintain a safe and healthy teaching environment.
- Ensure that the latest developments in ICT and other initiatives are an integral part of teaching in the Department.
- Assist, where required, with elements of the Core KS4 and KS5 Programmes.
- Ensure school and the Department of Children, Young People, Education and Skills policies are consistently followed across the Department, for example in relation to off site visits.
- Carry out other tasks as may reasonably be required by the Headteacher.

Qualification / Experience Required
- A good Honours Degree or higher in a History related subject
- PGCE or B.Ed in Secondary Education
- Experience of using ICT within teaching & learning programmes and the use of ICT to record and track student progress and performance
- Knowledge and understanding of the latest developments in History teaching
- This post is open to those with recent successful teaching experience
- Experience of leading others or can demonstrate the potential to lead others
- Outstanding knowledge of History courses and the teaching of them

The following provides a definition of the Teachers’ Task:
1. Teach effectively to meet the needs of all pupils and to ensure discipline and safety within the school community.
2. The DfESC is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and requires all teachers to share this commitment.
3. Plan, prepare, evaluate and modify as necessary personal teaching methods, work programmes and teaching materials in accordance with the DfESC curricular policies and school schemes and standards.
4. Mark and maintain records of pupils’ work in accordance with DfESC and school policies.
5. Promote the general progress and welfare of pupils in classes or groups or individually as part of the school’s pastoral and counselling arrangements.
