Job Overview
An excitring opportnity has come up to work as a HealthCare Assistaant on the maternity ward.
A Maternity Health Care Assistant (HCA) is an integral member of the multidisciplinary maternity team, working across all areas of the service, including the labour ward, inpatient postnatal and antenatal wards, community settings, and antenatal clinics. The role provides essential support to midwives, women, birthing people, and newborn babies, contributing to safe, high‑quality, and compassionate maternity care.
Maternity HCAs are present during births, both on the labour ward and in theatre, offering practical and emotional support in fast‑paced and often unpredictable clinical environments. This role differs significantly from HCAs working on general nursing wards, requiring specialised knowledge, sensitivity, and the ability to respond to a range of complex maternity‑specific needs.
Key responsibilities include supporting women and families during the first days and weeks of life with their newborns. This involves assisting with infant feeding (including breastfeeding support under the guidance of midwives or infant‑feeding specialists), providing general newborn care, and helping parents build confidence in caring for their baby. HCAs also deliver essential personal care, promote mobilisation following birth or surgery, and support general hygiene to aid recovery and comfort.
As a core member of the maternity team, the Maternity HCA contributes to a positive birth and postnatal experience by ensuring compassionate care, maintaining safety, and fostering an environment where women, babies, and families feel supported, informed, and respected.
