Job Purpose

To direct & supervise on a daily shift basis the housekeeping staff to ensure that the hygiene & cleanliness of all areas of the hospital is maintained to the control of infection standards and that food & beverage service to the patients is carried out to the agreed standards.

To organise, direct and assist in all cleaning procedures to maintain high standards of cleanliness and ensure that all staff adhere to safe working practises in accordance with health and safety at work, infection control and basic food hygiene regulations.

Liaise with heads of departments and other staff  to ensure correct procedures and requirements are met by following & updating cleaning schedules in each area.

To check in staff and direct to area of work making arrangements for housekeeping cover on a daily basis taking into account holidays and sick leave and the needs of the service. To be able to prioritise work required.

Report to Head Housekeeper any incidents of accidents, sickness, absence or personnel matters and maintain records as required.

Carry out regular documented hygiene audits of all areas to ensure standards are met & follow up action where necessary.  Checking mechanical equipment and arrange for repair. Advise the Head Housekeeper  of any maintenance or replacement machinery required. Ensure all equipment and chemicals are correctly stored and used.

Receive medical certificates, social security cheques and receipting of such. Plan and implement rosters in conjunction with the Head Housekeeper . Complete weekly time sheets and submit to the Housekeeper Manager for authorisation weekly.

Check stock levels of cleaning materials on all wards and departments and top up where necessary from main store

Check and order stores required from suppliers as authorised. Receive and receipt deliveries store bulk items, process and record invoices to be sent to office for payment as required.

Ensure safe keeping of keys and ensuring all areas are secured.

To have regular formal and informal meetings with staff to ensure good communication and ensure that good industrial relationships are formed.  Deal with day to day matters of personnel and inform the Head Housekeeper of any relevant matters arising ensuring strict confidentiality of sensitive information given.

To actively participate in training and induction of staff in conjunction with the Head Housekeeper and Housekeeper Manager to ensure all staff are fully conversant with laid down standards and procedures.

To be aware of new developments & changes in policies, new products, services & materials in field of work and pass on relevant information to staff.

To operate the Hydrogen Peroxide machine and ensure the correct protocols and liaise with Infection Control and estates teams to ensure full compliance.

To work in any area required of Health & Social Services Housekeeping.

General skills / attributes

Basic numeracy & literacy skills

Basic computer skills

Supervisory skills & experience in a Health Care environment. 

Food Hygiene certificate level 4

Manual Handling training 

Chargehand /supervisor training/Team Building 

Clean driving license required. 

All update training as required

If not in possession of the above must be willing to undertake training and be sent on any relevant courses required.
