Job Overview
The Grounds Team, that work across the Active playing field sites, are looking for a Grounds Person to join the team. The right person will be hard working and take pride in their work. The role involves working on a wide variety of equipment and training will be given. This will include alternating shift (incl. weekends).

Job Purpose
Assist in the maintenance and development of the grounds linked to the Government’s sports facilities, including playing fields, artificial pitches and their surrounds. Carrying out a range of technical activities in line within horticultural good practice and relevant Sports recognised standards, adhering to the appropriate health and safety protocols.

Job Specific Outcomes
The postholder is responsible for undertaking a range of work relating to the preparation, maintenance and development of grounds forming the part of the Government’s portfolio of sports facilities. This includes ‘natural’ playing fields but also specialist artificial surfaces. In fulfilling their responsibilities, the postholder is required to:
Carry out the necessary maintenance and repair to the grounds and artificial pitches using an extensive range of specialist plant, machinery, equipment, vehicles, pesticides, and computerised irrigation systems as necessary.
Ensure the grounds and pitches are safe for use by members of the public, private clubs and other customers by conducting routine safety inspections of surface conditions, outside sports and play equipment. This requires the postholder to maintain various records of such inspections, together with maintenance and repairs required, as well as stock levels.
Ensure the grounds are clean, tidy and appropriate for use by conducting various activities according to the required schedules, this includes but is not limited to emptying bins, and changing rooms. The postholder is expected to proactively address any issues that emerge, as necessary.
Assist with the implementation of improvement projects as determined by the Grounds Manager to develop the grounds linked to the sports facilities in line with government’s objectives.
Maintain the security of the grounds, by opening up or locking up as required. Acting as a point of contact for members of the public, private clubs and other customers using the grounds and facilities. Acting as an Authorised Person under the Policing of Parks (Jersey) Regulations, to enforce the regulations, when necessary, formerly cautioning and making statements that may be used as evidence.
Monitor the online booking system for the various sports activities to prepare the grounds as necessary by removing covers, setting up and taking down equipment, marking up pitches in addition to preparing the grounds for larger or all-Island events. In so doing, it is important for the postholder to adhere to all health and safety protocols, relevant sports guidance and international standards.
Ensure the safety of members of the public using the grounds by maintaining regular training in emergency first-aid, including specific training relating to matters such as the use of defibrillators. The postholder is also responsible for writing up first-aid and incident reports and assisting in the controlled evacuation of the premises in the event of an emergency.
The postholder is expected to contribute to continuous service improvements, providing customer and procedural feedback to the Supervisor and/or Business Development team. The postholder is required to report on any deficient or defective grounds facilities via the relevant reporting system, as well as making suggestions on improvements that would enhance customer experience.
Qualifications
Qualifications
Level 3 recognised certificate of competence from the Grounds Management Association - and Foundation or Intermediate level modules, or their equivalents, in specialist areas that include shrubs and fine turf, bowling greens; cricket, and pesticides.
Knowledge
Hold up-to-date training validation in relation to a range of specialist matters. These include the use of pesticides/spraying certificates (PA1, PA2); appropriate training relating Grounds Management Association, both theory and science.
Technical Work Based Skills
Clean driving licence which incorporates classes C1 (Medium Goods) and E (which includes towing a trailer). Understand and apply safe use of first-line maintenance of a wide range of plant, machinery, and equipment, with such knowledge being acquired through formal training.
General skills / attributes
Able to mark a variety of Sports pitches to required standard under guidelines.
The postholder needs the ability to:
Understand and apply the Policing of Parks (Jersey) Regulations.
Understand and apply the requirements of local health and safety laws.
Use the bespoke computerised booking systems.
Understand and apply safeguarding awareness / protocols.
Experience
An individual appointed directly to the post would be expected to have prior experience working as a grounds person or to have undertaken a relevant apprenticeship. Experience of maintaining public landscaped areas It would be expected that an appointee would be experienced in working independently.
