Job Purpose

Rotational Midwives are autonomous practitioners accountable for their own midwifery practice and will fulfil the following role through the ability to make decisions within current protocols and principles of care in compliance within guidelines and spheres of professional practice. They are required to take responsibility as a prime care provider for service users in either the inpatients service, antenatal clinic or community/home setting and will follow a pattern of rotation between the three aforementioned areas.

 

They are responsible for planning and providing care and support to service users and their families throughout the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal period, helping them to make informed choices about their personalised care. They will be required to participate in the Maternity Services on-call system. 

Statutory Responsibilities

Active engagement, participation and compliance with any other statutory responsibilities applicable to the role, as amended from time to time. This role is politically restricted. The job holder is not permitted to undertake political activity involving standing for election to the Government or as a Parish Constable, or publicly supporting someone who is standing for election or playing a public part in any political manner.

Job Specific Outcomes 1 of 2

  • Working as an autonomous practitioner each midwife is accountable for the care they give to service users and their babies. The midwife is a specialist in midwifery practice and should have the ability to act as lead professional in the care of low-risk service users and to coordinate and implement the care of high-risk service users in collaboration with the obstetric team.

 

  • Provide care in partnership with doctors and other members of the multi-disciplinary team especially when deviations from the norm occur to promote a healthy outcome for service users and their babies

 

  •  Support service users and their families who have limited or no English – arranging interpreting services to assist with communication. Ensuring any impairments to communication are understood and care facilitated

 

  • Provide effective leadership and act as a good role model, supervising and teaching qualified and unqualified staff as required.

 

  • Preform clinical tasks & risk assessment on service users which includes but is not limited to urinalysis, physiological measurements, blood sugar testing, infant feeding, venepuncture, canulation, catheterisation, wound swabs, eye swabs, CTG, MRSA swabs, stool samples, sputum specimens and record accurately on EPR/MEWS and escalate concerns as appropriate

 

  • Be aware and compliant with of all relevant Health & Community Services policies, procedures and clinical guidelines and escalate any concerns/breaches to a Midwifery Sister/Charge Midwife or Midwifery Manager.

 

  •  Assist and support Doctors with medical procedures, remain competent to support instrumental deliveries and assisting at operative deliveries.

  • Provide a full range of education, advice and counselling to service users and their family including discussions about care options and signpost them to relevant resources and agencies.

 

  • They will work within guidelines that enable their scope of practice but are responsible for recognising their limitation and undertaking continuous professional development and a portfolio for revalidation.

 

  • Participate in the continual review, development, and improvement of maternity services by partaking in quality auditing processes and providing input into the development of future policies, procedures and clinical guidelines.

 

  • Take a pro-active approach to risk management, raising learning points through DATIX, working with colleagues to reduce risk in all areas of service delivery in line with clinical governance.

 

  •  Exhibit professional behaviour and attitude being a positive role model for colleagues and service users, acting in a manner which illustrates respect for privacy, dignity and confidentiality.

 

  • Have a comprehensive understanding of medication safety principles, including the principles of administration, storage, and handling of medicines, including those under midwives’ exemptions. They will also engage in discussions with service users, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate and up to date information regarding medicines

 

  • Identity safeguarding issues relating all services users and their families and undertake the relevant referrals to agencies to ensure support is provided.

 

  • Confidently and competently care for and support service users choosing to birth in a range of settings, including but not limited to consultant led labour ward, midwifery led unit & home

Qualifications

NMC Registered Midwife

 

Midwifery Degree/equivalent

 

Basic Adult Life Support

 

Safeguarding Level 3 Qualification

Knowledge

Recognising the limits of scope and authority within role.

 

Knowledge and understanding of healthcare associated midwifery issues.

 

Accepts responsibility and accountability for their own practice. Understands the principles of confidentiality.

 

Commitment to selfdevelopment; must have evidence of recent professional development.

Technical Work Based Skills

Proficient use of Microsoft Office applications e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
