Job Overview

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Occupational Therapist to work across an innovative  Rehabilitation Pathway supporting women with complex emotional needs and adults with complex mental health needs. This role provides an opportunity to deliver recovery-focused, trauma-informed occupational therapy interventions that promote independence, wellbeing, social inclusion, and meaningful participation in daily life.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Occupational Therapist will support individuals with complex presentations, helping them develop the skills, confidence, and resilience required to achieve their personal recovery goals and maintain successful community living. The post holder will contribute to assessment, care planning, risk management, rehabilitation, and service development while promoting occupational justice and person-centred practice.

The post holder will care co-ordinate a small caseload of adults with complex mental health needs and women with complex emotional needs, including those with co-existing social, psychological, and physical health challenges.

The role requires a compassionate and adaptable practitioner who can build therapeutic relationships, manage complexity, and work collaboratively with service users, families, carers, and partner agencies across health, social care, housing, and community services.

Job Purpose

The Occupational Therapist will provide specialist occupational therapy assessment, intervention, and rehabilitation across the Rehabilitation Pathway for women with complex emotional needs and adults with complex mental health needs. Working within a trauma-informed, recovery-focused framework, the post holder will support individuals to maximise independence, develop meaningful life roles, enhance daily living skills, and achieve their personal recovery goals.

The post holder will work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver person-centred care that promotes social inclusion, community participation, emotional wellbeing, and sustained recovery. Through comprehensive assessment and evidence-based interventions, the Occupational Therapist will enable service users to overcome barriers to occupational functioning, build resilience, and improve their ability to live fulfilling lives within their communities.

The role will contribute to the development and delivery of high-quality rehabilitation services, ensuring that interventions are outcome-focused, strengths-based, and aligned with best practice standards in mental health and community rehabilitation. The Occupational Therapist will also provide professional leadership in the application of occupational therapy principles, supporting service development, quality improvement, and integrated partnership working across health, social care, housing, and voluntary sector services.

Statutory Responsibilities

The post holder will practise in accordance with all relevant Jersey legislation, professional standards, and organisational policies, ensuring that care is delivered safely, lawfully, and in line with the principles of recovery, human rights, safeguarding, and person-centred practice.

The Occupational Therapist will:

  • Maintain registration and practise in accordance with the standards of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Royal College of Occupational Therapists professional standards.
  • Work in accordance with the Capacity and Self-Determination (Jersey) Law 2016, applying the principles of capacity assessment, best-interest decision-making, and least restrictive practice when supporting individuals who may lack capacity. 
  • Work in accordance with the Mental Health (Jersey) Law 2016, contributing to assessment, care planning, risk management, rehabilitation, and the rights and safeguards afforded to individuals receiving mental health services.
  • Adhere to the requirements of the Regulation of Care (Jersey) Law 2014 and associated standards, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led services. 
  • Fulfil safeguarding responsibilities, identifying and responding appropriately to concerns relating to abuse, neglect, exploitation, self-harm, suicide risk, domestic abuse, or risks to children and adults at risk. 
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and legally compliant clinical records in accordance with organisational policies, professional standards, information governance requirements, and relevant data protection legislation.
  • Promote and uphold the rights, dignity, diversity, and inclusion of all service users, ensuring care is delivered without discrimination and in accordance with human rights principles.
  • Ensure consent is sought and appropriately documented in line with legal and professional requirements and the individual's capacity to make decisions. 
  • Report incidents, concerns, and near misses in accordance with organisational governance arrangements and professional duty of candour requirements

Qualifications

  • Degree, Diploma or Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy recognised by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Current HCPC registration as an Occupational Therapist.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to mental health, rehabilitation, recovery, and occupational therapy practice.
  • Eligibility to work within Jersey and travel independently across community settings.
  • Training in trauma-informed care, personality disorder services, sensory approaches, vocational rehabilitation, or psychosocial interventions.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of recovery-focused, strengths-based, and trauma-informed approaches to working with adults experiencing complex mental health difficulties.
  • Knowledge of occupational therapy models and assessments relevant to mental health and community rehabilitation.
  • Understanding of the Capacity and Self-Determination (Jersey) Law 2016 and its application to practice. 
  • Understanding of the Mental Health (Jersey) Law 2016 and associated codes of practice.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment, safeguarding, and positive risk-taking within mental health services.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion, and human rights-based practice.

  • Ability to engage and build therapeutic relationships with individuals who may be reluctant to engage with services.

Experience

  • Experience of working as an Occupational Therapist within adult mental health services.
  • Experience working with women with complex emotional needs and/or personality disorder presentations.
  • Experience of undertaking comprehensive occupational therapy assessments and developing person-centred intervention plans.
  • Experience of multidisciplinary working with health, social care, housing, voluntary sector, and community partners.
  • Experience supporting individuals with complex mental health needs, emotional dysregulation, risk, and social exclusion.
  • Experience managing a caseload and prioritising competing demands effectively.
  • Experience facilitating therapeutic groups and delivering individual interventions focused on recovery and independent living.
