Job Overview

There has been an exciting development with peer mentoring in Children Social Care Services Jersey. 

This role is available for anyone who has experience of living in care to work alongside the team around the child, supporting care experienced children and young adults up until the age of 25.

Job Purpose

The peer mentor will work directly with children and young people with experience of care primarily on a one-to-one basis with the aim of supporting them to move towards more stable and fulfilling lives.

The peer mentor will build a relationship with the mentee to develop their resilience, to facilitate & encourage, and to empower individuals to identify and develop opportunities to fulfil their long-term aspirations.

The peer mentor role is open for young people with lived care experience which makes them ‘experts by experience'.

Statutory Responsibilities

The postholder will have to comply with all relevant States Laws, such as the Children (Jersey) Law 2002, Secure Accommodation regulations, Adoption and fostering legislation, Health and Safety at Work (Jersey) Law 1989 and any other associated legislation. 1. To build relationships with care experienced young people as a positive role model.

2. To provide informal support, coaching and guidance to care experienced children and young people.

3. To build relationships with children and young people using a strength based, and trauma informed approach, in a flexible manner, i.e., home or community based, evenings and weekends.

4. To support care experienced children and young people to develop life skills and achieve their aspirations.

5. To facilitate sessions with mentees on an “as and when needed” basis which can include day, evening and weekend work. Sessions will be between 2 – 4 hours and allocated at the discretion of the Mentor Co-ordinator.

6. To work in partnership with all professionals and agencies involved with the young person, including the voluntary sector acting as a bridge between the young person and services to develop and expand their support network as needed.

7. To maintain confidentiality while keeping clear boundaries of the mentor / mentee relationships.

8. To monitor the progress of the mentor / mentee relationship by keeping accurate records and suing different feedback formats.

9. To attend and participate in learning and training, as required including Child Protection training.

10. To support and empower young people to navigate through the challenged that children in care and care leavers face as experts by experience.

Qualifications

Essential

 A good standard of verbal and written English

Lived Experience of being in the care of the Minister for Children

Desirable

English and Maths GCSEs or equivalent

Other languages

Mental health first aid or willingness to train

Knowledge

Essential

Understanding of the emotional, psychological, and practical issues often faced by care experienced young people

Sound working knowledge of safeguarding for children and vulnerable adults.

Desirable

Familiarity or experience with trauma-informed practice, strength based and relationship practice.

Technical Work Based Skills

Essential

Able to communicate naturally and empathetically with young people.

Good written and verbal communication skills.

Good IT (Information Technology) literacy, particularly Microsoft Office. Strong time management.

Desirable 

High level of emotional intelligence, and ability to be non-judgemental and neutral (putting aside own views) when listening and consulting.

General skills / attributes

Essential

Commitment to improving the lives and opportunities of children in care and care leavers.

Good self-motivation, initiative and ability to work independently.
