Job Overview

We’re looking for a caring and motivated Phlebotomist to join our experienced team at the General Hospital. This is a fantastic opportunity to play an important role in patient care by supporting both in-patient wards and out-patient phlebotomy clinics.

Phlebotomy experience would be an advantage but full training will be provided for the right candidate.  We are looking for a colleague with motivation, reliability, and a patient-focused approach.

Working hours

  • 25 hours per week, mainly Monday to Friday
  • Occasional Saturday morning ward cover (approximately once every six weeks)

Job Purpose

The post holder will provide a high quality phlebotomy service whilst ensuring strict infection control practices are upheld. The role encompasses both adults and paediatric patients (over 12 years of age) in inpatient and outpatient settings. The post holder will demonstrate a level of skill and understanding which enables them undertake specific task in accordance with relevant procedures, guidelines and policies. Blood samples will be collected, labelled and dispatched to the relevant laboratory teams in a timely manner in order to achieve accurate test results

Active engagement, participation and compliance with any other statutory responsibilities applicable to the role, as amended from time to time

Budgetary Responsibility

Ensure adequate stock of phlebotomy equipment across the hospital, whilst considering the overall usage of consumables in line with budgetary control, ordering more stock when required. Preventing shortages and ensures the availability of necessary supplies, contributing to the smooth functioning of the phlebotomy service.

1. 2. Advice and support patients within their scope of knowledge demonstrating compassion and reassurance for those who may be nervous about having their blood taken and escalating any issues outside of their scope to a registered nursing practitioner. Ensuring verbal consent is obtained from the patient before any phlebotomy is undertaken. Patients feel supported and reassured, leading to a more comfortable experience

3. Ensure compliance against all local policies and procedures for example, data protection, infection control practices , hand hygiene and needle stick injury. Ensures safe disposal of sharps and is aware of the procedure to undertake if a needle stick injury occurs. This maintains a safe and hygienic environment, reducing the risk of infections.

4. Coordinate the outpatient phlebotomy clinic under the delegated responsibility of the area manager or registered nurse. The post holder will be required to work in a clinic setting daily, this area will be led by a registered nurse who is there to provide advice and support. Perform venepuncture for inpatient wards and outpatient clinic, including children over 12 years old, as part of the phlebotomy service. This will ensure efficient and organised clinic operations, providing timely and effective phlebotomy services to patients. 

Person specification

Essential: 

In possession of or committed to work towards level 2 vocational diploma award in care and RQF venepuncture module. Awareness of patient care needs. Awareness of Health and Safety systems. Willingness to learn a new skill and undertake work-based training programmeasic IT Skills with the ability to use digital health systems. Demonstrate person-centred care focus. Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to build relationships with Patients/Clients, families and colleagues

Manage own time effectively, ensure good time keeping in relation to shift commencement, work load and breaks.

Desirable

Experience in healthcare settings.

Qualifications

Desirable: Previous experience in health care or customer care.
