Job Purpose

To work as an autonomous rotational Physiotherapist and contribute to a high standard of Physiotherapy within the Health and Community Services.

Contribution to the Respiratory On-Call and weekend emergency service.

Key relationships within the Multi-disciplinary team (MDT), patient, family members, carers, community services and providers to facilitate patient centred management. 

To support senior staff with the management of assistance staff, and with service audit and development. 

Statutory Responsibilities

Active engagement, participation and compliance with any other statutory responsibilities applicable to the role, as amended from time to time.

This role is politically restricted. The job holder is not permitted to undertake political activity involving standing for election to the Government or as a Parish Constable, or publicly supporting someone who is standing for election or playing a public part in any political manner.

The post holder will have to comply with all relevant States Laws, such as the Health and Safety at Work (Jersey) Law 1989 and any other associated legislation, Standing Orders, Financial Directions, and other relevant Codes of Practice.

Ensure appropriate communication of relevant patient information through the maintenance and updating of patient/client records in line with the requirements of Clinical Governance and Quality as set out in the Standards of Practice from the CSP; HCPC and H&CS.

To meet all requirements of Clinical Governance (e.g. statutory & mandatory training; CPD; reflective practice etc.) and propose any necessary changes to Physiotherapy service delivery, which this may give rise to.

Job Specific Outcomes 1 of 2

  • To be professionally responsible and accountable for all aspects of physiotherapy management of a mixed caseload of low and moderately complex patients. This role involves rotating across different speciality teams on a regular basis, including Musculoskeletal, Orthopaedics, Cardiorespiratory (inclusive of Intensive Care), Neurology and Frailty in the in-patient, out-patient and community settings.
  • To work as a physiotherapy practitioner, planning and delivering the assessment, ongoing evaluation and treatment of patient caseload, ensuring a patient-centred, goal-orientated Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation programmes, utilising clinical reasoning skills and relevant outcome measures.
  • To maintain accurate clinical records and statistical data in accordance with professional standards and departmental policy, and provide written clinical reports to multi-disciplinary colleagues to optimise holistic patient care.
  • To support senior staff by taking responsibility for daily time management of patient caseload and other duties to meet service and patient priorities, readjusting plans as situations change/arise. Delegate and allocate duties to other members of staff, as appropriate.
  • To work as an autonomous physiotherapist within professional boundaries and the post holder's individual scope of practice. To seek supervision from Senior Physiotherapists as necessary to ensure that patients are managed safely and effectively. 
  • To be aware of safe working practice in all settings and identify if vulnerable patients may be at risk. To highlight any risks to senior staff and follow all relevant Government of Jersey (GoJ) policies including safeguarding.
  • To participate in the emergency overnight on-call service, and, as a lone Physiotherapy practitioner, in order to provide treatment for acutely unwell patients and provide advice to medical and nursing staff caring for such patients.
  • To support senior staff with day to day service management duties, including supporting other rotational physiotherapists, assistant members of staff, and physiotherapy students.
  • To support senior staff by contributing to service audit activity and supporting service development initiatives, including an active contribution and participation in training GOJ health professionals. This involves leading some in-service training sessions within the Physiotherapy Department.

Qualifications

  • Degree and/or diploma of Physiotherapy or Chartered Society of Physiotherapy accredited Masters.
  • Qualified member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
  • Be registered as a Physiotherapist with the Healthcare Professions Council and the Jersey Care Commission. This requires evidence of maintaining professional development

Knowledge

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of Cardiorespiratory, Musculoskeletal, Neurological, Orthopaedics and Medical Physiotherapy underpinned by clinical experience and Continued Professional Development (CPD).
  • Ability to apply theoretical and practical knowledge of Physiotherapy within inpatient, outpatient and community settings.
  • Broad professional knowledge and experience of a wide range of Cardiorespiratory, Musculoskeletal, Neurological, Orthopaedics and Medical health conditions, pathology, disease and impairment in order to assess and treat patients safely and effectively.
  • Adequate knowledge to advise patients and other health care professionals about how a diagnosis relates to both presentation and management as well as the impact of other co-morbidities on the diagnosed condition.
  • Detailed understanding of the role of the wider MDT, supporting strategic work and the delivery of safe, effective and cohesive clinical care.
  • Have an understanding of clinical governance, its systematic evaluation and application.
  • Knowledge of Health & Social Care legislation and current practice.
  • Develop knowledge on current evidence based practise through clinical projects, audit and outcome measures with the aim of making recommendations for change. Either independently or alongside a senior Physiotherapist

Technical Work Based Skills

  • To be able to undertake analytical and comprehensive assessment and treatment of patients within different clinical settings.
  • To be able to interpret a wide range of complex information to form a clinical presentation. Including use of imaging, pathology results, clinical notes, observation charts and ventilator settings.
  • Competent in delivering a range of treatment modalities using up to date evidence based research with different patient groups within a variety of Physiotherapy settings. Including but not limited to: strength training, respiratory techniques, manual therapy, functional movement training, advice and education.
  • Able to effectively communicate assessment findings, diagnosis, pathophysiology, available treatment options and their potential outcomes including relevant risks and rehabilitation timescales. 
  • Basic wound assessment and management. 
  • Ability to triage, organise, prioritise, and delegate patients in relation to own caseload. Including the ability to recognise the need for more specialist MDT intervention.
  • Computer skills that enable use of word processing, data collection and analysis, literature searching and presentation production. Dictation and succinct letter writing
  • Accurate record keeping of clinical practice in line with professional guidance.
  • To effectively deliver training to other health care professionals via in-service trainings on a regular basis.
  • To be able to liaise with colleagues regarding suggestions for departmental changes and development.
  • To be able to undertake a mentally and physically demanding job, whilst at the same time taking care to safeguard their health and safety as well as colleagues and patients.
  • Continual risk assessment and re-assessment in a range of clinical settings, including consent to treatments.
  • Independent management of own caseload in the absence of senior physiotherapist.

General skills / attributes

  • Negotiating and interpersonal skills to facilitate rehabilitation in both group and individual settings.
  • Effective communication of clinical information and recommendations for patient management. This can include sensitive and complex clinical information and prognoses for patients. Including those with communication impairments.
  • Ability to engage with complex patients in rehabilitation and active self-management (e.g. cognitive, emotional, behavioural barriers).
  • Problem solving and analytical skills, undertaking ongoing risk assessment and clinical reasoning for complex patients with multiple co-morbidities.
  • Time management skills to manage busy workload with demands of the wider team requiring impromptu support, clinical guidance and prioritisation of patients.
  • Able to remain professional and work effectively under pressure. T
  • o undertake a yearly personal Performance Review and Appraisal reflecting on clinical practise through CPD and the PRA procedure to positively impact future clinical practise.

Experience

  • Placements at undergraduate level totalling 1,000 clinical hours within the core areas of Physiotherapy which include Cardiorespiratory, Neurological and Musculoskeletal.
  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Up to date registration with Jersey Care Commission and with the HCPC.
  • Up to date DBS enhanced check and up to date adult safeguarding training/child protection training.
  • To work within the CSP and HCPC professional codes of practice and ethics.
