The Fire Safety department in SJFRS are looking for an experienced and skilled Fire Safety expert to join their team. We are looking for an individual with extensive experience working within Regulatory Reform 'Fire Safety' Order 2005 and ready to lead and mentor their colleagues in Jersey. Leadership experience is required, an aptitude to develop the team around you as well as delivering a number of key initiatives across the department.
The requirements and development of legislation in Fire Safety are ever growing, we are learning from the UK whilst trying to implement our own legislation across Fire Safety. This is an exciting time to join, and we are looking for individuals who are keen to share their experience and learning. In return, we will invest in your growth and development.
As an island we have all the infrastructure that would be found in much larger jurisdictions elsewhere. An airport, prison, bulk fuel storage terminal, gas terminal, fuel and gas tanker berth, commercial port, leisure ports and marinas, waste facilities, a general hospital with further development of a new acute hospital, world renowned finance and legal sectors and a high, per capita number of high rise buildings (44) in addition to circa 80 medium rise.
At present our fire precautions legislative framework is based around the prescriptive Fire Precautions (Jersey) Law 1970. We are currently fully committed to reforming fire safety, including the development of new fire safety legislation, including fire precautions and pyrotechnics, whilst actively working on the response to the Grenfell Tower inquiries. We are also working as part of a team alongside our Regulation colleagues to reform the Building Bye-Laws (Jersey) 2007 Technical Guidance Document-Fire Safety to bring us up to date with our UK colleagues.
2025 will see the introduction of a new Community Fire Risk Management Information System within the Fire Safety Department to provide a comprehensive auditing and operational intelligence package.
Job Purpose
The role
The role of the Senior Fire Safety Inspector is to provide expert advice on fire safety and technical matters to the public, staff and our stakeholders. As well as being the SME this role will also:
- Provide mentorship and leadership to the Fire Safety department, imparting knowledge and experience of working within Fire Safety Legislation
- Contribute to the preparation and amendment of Fire Safety legislation and Technical Guidance Documents and;
- Lead, manage and implement Fire Safety projects to achieve our strategic priorities as set out in our CRMP.
To be successful you will:
- Be operating / have operated at the strategic ‘Leading the Function’ level in the National Fire Chiefs Council’s Leadership Framework in a Fire and Rescue Service.
- Have extensive experience of working with the Regulatory Reform 'Fire Safety' Order 2005
- Be confident leading and guiding teams through complexity and ambiguity and responding to people and community needs.
