Job Overview
The States of Jersey Police processes both personal data and special category data of approximately 300,000 individuals. The postholder will become a key member of the Information Governance Team responsible for ensuring the States of Jersey Police (SOJP) comply with the Data Protection Law, Freedom of Information Law (FOI), and national police records management guidelines.
The postholder will be involved in all aspects of data protection compliance including the servicing of subject access requests, rectifying inaccurate data, conducting data protection impact assessments, data audits, drafting data sharing agreements, and data breach management.
The FOI Law provides members of the public with access to non-personal information held by SOJP, such as internal policies and statistics. The postholder will be involved in collating such data and drafting a response for approval by a senior officer. The postholder will be familiar with the range of legal exemptions that may need to be considered in order, for example, to protect individual privacy or public security.
SOJP follows national police records retention guidelines. There is an ongoing need to review case files and determine whether there is a requirement to retain or weed such files. This will involve working with various media formats, including paper files held in storage and will include manual handling of archive boxes which may weigh up to 20kgs. Some files, considered to be of historic interest, are transferred to Jersey Archive in accordance with the Public Records Law and the postholder would be expected to liaise with staff at Jersey Archive. On occasions, the postholder will need to search for old historic paper files to service the needs of investigating officers who may be re-opening an old case.
The nature of SOJP’s business means that the postholder will often be exposed to accounts of violence or abuse. Much of the information held will be very sensitive and highly confidential and the postholder will be expected to be very discreet both at work, but especially when out of work.
Although the role is advertised as a Grade 10, consideration may be given to initially appointing at a Grade 9 with a development plan to rise to Grade 10 on satisfactory progress.
