Job Overview

Haute Vallee School is seeking to appoint a dynamic and enthusiastic Senior Learning Support Assistant to work within our Mathematics Department, to support all students and Teaching staff in the management and improvement of all things Mathematics related.  This is an exciting opportunity to join and be part of a team that will guide and support students through their relationship with Mathematics from Year 7 to Year 11.  The successful applicant will have experience of working as a Learning Support Assistant, ideally with experience of managing a team.  Applicants should have excellent communication and computer skills and be able to work under pressure in a busy, vibrant secondary school, whilst demonstrating a nurturing and caring approach to support the students and staff.  Ideally applicants will have exceptional organisational skills to support this key role whilst demonstrating excellent teamwork and leadership. He/she should be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills when working with students, staff and parents. The successful applicant will be well organised, flexible, friendly and be able to work to deadlines.

Job Purpose

  • To provide the teaching staff within the Mathematics Department with appropriate support by taking responsibility for agreed learning activities under an agreed system of supervision. This will involve planning, preparing and delivering learning activities for individuals/groups. This includes supporting the emotional wellbeing of students. 
  • To monitor students, record and report on achievement, progress and development
  • Be responsible for the supervision and development of a structured program within the Mathematics Department.
  • Support the Head of Mathematics by completing various administrative jobs.
  • Support the SENDCo, as necessary, this may include such duties as contacting parents and dealing with the administrative tasks involved in the delivery of a concise and efficient Mathematics Intervention Program. 

 

Principal Accountabilities

  • To support across different Mathematics classes in Years 7-11 working with students with a range of different abilities.
  • To plan, coordinate and initiate early intervention for identified students through specific and appropriate Mathematics intervention sessions guided by the SENDCo and Head of Mathematics.
  • To oversee the order of books and equipment for the Mathematics Department termly and organising the storing of items.
  • To assist with administrative jobs including entering data, photocopying, sticking/stapling, trimming and developing Mathematics displays.
  • To support students who require access arrangements in lessons, when completing end of topic assessments and when completing their official examinations.
  • To assist with the proof reading of reports with the Mathematics staff.
  • To support students with accessing homework and helping students in homework club.
  • To advise Class Teachers and Learning Support Assistants on approaches and strategies to use with students within the special needs area.
  • Monitor and evaluate students’ responses to learning activities through planned observations and recording achievement against pre-determined targets.
  • To assist in examination invigilation and administer access arrangements.
  • Be aware and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health and safety, confidentiality, and data protection.
  • Assist with supervision of students outside of lessons including before and after school and lunchtimes.
  • Attend department meetings providing information for students.
  • To have knowledge of and monitor the progress and development of Jersey Premium students. To liaise with the Jersey Premium Coordinator to ensure up to date recording of all aspects of school involvement

Working Relationships

  • Working collaboratively with the Head of Mathematics, students and Teachers, to support the running of the Mathematics Department.
  • Establish good relationships with teaching staff and use specialist knowledge to support others.
  • Ensure effective communication with the team around the child, to include all staff, form tutors etc.
  • Establish good working relationships with parents ensuring regular communication.
  • Establish constructive relationships, communicate, and liaise with other agencies/professionals to support achievement and progress of students.
  • Establish solid working relationships with the SEN Team, SENDCo and Heads of Years, including the Teachers and Form Tutors.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with our primary feeder schools to aid the transition process.

Qualifications

Essential: 

  • Good numeracy/literacy skills to level 3 standard.
  • Diploma in early education and care qualification or NVQ 3.
  • At least 5 years experience working with students in secondary education. 

Desirable: 

  • Appropriate first aid training.
  • ELSA training or equivalent.

 

 

Knowledge

Essential: 

  • Experience of leading a team.
  • Experience of using examination access arrangments process.
  • Understanding of the principles of child development and learning processes, in addition barriers to learning. Continually using this knowledge to analyse and implement appropriate strategies that will support students indidvidually or within a group.
  • Knowledge of how to monitor and evalaute students responses to learning activities.
  • Working knowledge of curriculum and other relevant learning prgrammes.
  • Knowledge of health and safety.
  • Full working knowledge or relevant policies and codes of practice

Desirable

  • Have received training in the delivery of well being programme's to support specific social emotional health concerns.
  • Knowledge of the ELSA programme.

  • The ability to judge when a student is behaving out of character and take appropriate action
  • The ability to relate well to students and adults.
  • The ability to communicate at all levels whilst maintaining complete confidentiality.
  • The ability to organise schedules with outside agencies and other schools.

  • Determine the need for and prepare resources to enable students to access the Mathematics curriculum in withdrawal groups/one to one/ or in whole class situations.
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills.
  • Can use ICT effectively to enhance learning

Desirable:

  • Flexibility in order to accommodate unexpected requests for support. 

Experience

Essential: 

  • Experience of working with students with additional complex needs. 

Desirable: 

  • Experience of working with students with specific emotional needs.
