Senior Laboratory Technician (1Year Parental Leave Cover Contract) - JCG

Jersey College for Girls is looking to recruit a Senior Laboratory Technician to join our busy and successful Science Faculty.

The successful candidate will provide a comprehensive support service to all students and staff in the Science Department. This role is integral to supporting the delivery of exceptional learning experiences and ensuring the smooth running of our science labs.

Job Purpose

To be responsible to the Head of Science for the work carried out by the laboratory technicians in the preparation for, and support of the teaching of, Science.

Specific responsibilities

To support student learning within the Science Faculty

To be responsible to the Head of Science for the work carried out by the Laboratory Technicians and support teaching staff

To ensure the adequate provision, correct use and sustained maintenance of all resources required by the Science Faculty

To be responsible for maintaining all Health and Safety requirements within the Science Faculty

Principal Accountabilities

To support student learning within the Science Faculty

To prepare resources as requested and assist with the organisation and the production of lesson materials

To ensure that practical requests are produced on time for each lesson

To check the cleanliness and working order of equipment and arrange repairs where necessary

To assist in the construction and repair of apparatus

To input data, including assessment results, into the computer and update databases

To assist and support teachers and students where appropriate

To be responsible to the Head of Science for the work carried out by the Laboratory Technicians and support teaching staff

To be responsible for the supervision of non-teaching laboratory staff in the  execution of their duties.

To be responsible for the training of non-teaching laboratory staff in school.

To conduct performance reviews for other non-teaching laboratory staff.

To assist the HoF with the performance review and appraisal of non-teaching laboratory staff.

To be responsible for the allocation of responsibilities and duties of non-teaching laboratory staff.

To assist with the appointment of non-teaching laboratory staff.

​​​​​​​To support teaching staff where appropriate.

To ensure the adequate provision, correct use and sustained maintenance of all resources required by the Science Faculty

Monitor and control of the chemical stock.

To ensure that all equipment, chemicals etc are produced efficiently and punctually as requested by the Head of Science

Ensuring that all laboratories are correctly stocked with equipment and that all mains services are in working order

​​​​​​​Maintaining and developing audio-visual aids, including the pre-setting of videos and maintain video/DVD records.​​​​​​​

Maintaining computer records including the stock control database for all chemicals and the annual faculty inventory.  ​​​​​​

Being responsible for maintaining stock levels and for processing all orders for chemicals, equipment, stationery, texts and software and recording expenditure.

To be responsible for maintaining all Health and Safety requirements within the Science Faculty

Checking and storing new and used equipment and advising staff in matters ​​​of safety legislation  and demonstrating the correct use of unfamiliar equipment.

Preparing chemicals and solutions, ensuring that the preparation rooms are maintained as clean   and safe working environments and that current laboratory safety legislation is strictly adhered to with particular regard to the storage, use and disposal of chemicals.

Cleaning glassware and other apparatus.

​​​​​​​Provide first aid cover to the Science Faculty and to the rest of the school as required.

​​​​​​​To advise all staff within the Faculty on matters of safety legislation and safe use of chemicals and equipment within the Science area.

 

To be responsible for the Science Garden

To be responsible for overseeing the development and upkeep of the Science Garden as a useable outside area

To monitor the use of the Science garden and the resources it provides

Person Specification

An ideal candidate for this post will have:

The ability to relate to and deal positively with students and staff

The ability to work under pressure and to respond positively to unforeseen circumstances

Flexibility

A good general education with an appropriate scientific qualification

A willingness to become a qualified first aider (if not already qualified)

A knowledge of the health and safety regulations relating to the areas of the school in which the post holder works

The ability to use relevant software packages

Any other reasonable task as required by the Principal.
