Job Overview

We are recruiting a Site Advisor for the Solid Waste department at La Collette. The role is customer-focused, and involves ensuring that all waste and recyclables delivered to the Department's facilities are disposed of in the correct manner. 

 

The successful applicant will provide a high level of customer service by providing information and direction in relation to waste disposal and recycling. They will help ensure the safety of all customers, staff and other site users at all of the waste reception sites administered by the Government of Jersey by providing a clean waste reception site and removing waste contamination.

Principal Responsibilities

The Reception Site Advisor may be required, on a daily basis to:

• Undertake general site manual work to include (not limited to) cleaning duties, packaging and stacking of waste items in order to provide safe and clean waste reception sites, removing contaminated wastes.

• Carry out banksman duties when plant and/or commercial vehicles are operating on the reception sites and also direct domestic vehicles.

• Provide information and direction to our customers in relation to waste disposal and recycling and when required assist customers with the disposal/recycling of waste, this will include unloading vehicles and trailers.

• Ensure that all waste received at the reception sites is in accordance with the Waste license. Sorting of mixed loads.

• Handle various hazardous wastes, such as but not limited to, paints, TV’s and computer monitors.

• Sort waste material into the correct waste collection receptacle. 

•  Report, monitor and /or reject any non-compliance waste with respect to the receiving and handling of waste.

• Report any damage to property/ items requiring maintenance or repair. 

• Understand and work within the safe working practices of the department.

• In the event of inclement weather, clear mud, snow and ice from the entrance of the reception sites.

• Undertake duties associated with the weighing of waste

Knowledge and experience required

• Must possess a good standard of education, and have demonstrable experience in a customer focused environment.

• Must be able to communicate verbally in English is essential

• Good verbal communication skills, common sense, diplomacy, mature and understanding manner as the postholder will often be the first point of contact when dealing with members of the general public.

• Ability to deal with awkward customers, queries and complaints is essential • Basic computer skills to operate weighbridge systems and/or data logging.

• The ability to learn and understand recycling and waste disposal information, including statistical information which must be accurately passed on to any customers.

• A good level of physical fitness is essential as the job is strenuous and sometimes requires dealing with unpleasant waste including oil, human and animal matter.

• Knowledge of the relevant Health and Safety legislation and practices
