Location: Emergency Department, Jersey General Hospital
Grade:  NM04 (Band 5 equivalent responsibilities depending on role)
Reports to: Senior Charge Nurse / Ward Manager / ED Lead Nurse

The Senior Staff Nurse provides high-quality, patient-centred emergency care to adults and children presenting with a wide range of acute illnesses, injuries, and life-threatening conditions. The post holder acts as a clinical leader and role model, supporting the delivery of safe, effective, and evidence-based care whilst supervising and developing junior staff. 

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for patients with complex and undifferentiated conditions.
• Coordinate patient care across the Emergency Department and wider multidisciplinary team.
• Take charge of clinical areas or manage patient flow when required.
• Support resuscitation and emergency responses, acting as a clinical resource for the team.
• Promote patient safety, professional standards and best practice. 

Team Management and Supervision

• Provide leadership and support to registered nurses, healthcare assistants and student nurses.
• Act as a role model and mentor.
• Participate in staff induction, teaching, competency assessments and supervision.
• Assist with performance development and workforce planning. 

Professional Practice

• Work in accordance with the NMC Code and local policies.
• Maintain a professional portfolio demonstrating continuing professional development.
• Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives and service development.
• Ensure accurate and timely documentation. 

Communication and Collaboration

• Work effectively within the multidisciplinary team.
• Provide advice, support and health education to patients and relatives.
• Liaise with specialty teams, ambulance services and community providers to ensure continuity of care. 

Essential Skills

• Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.

A successful Senior Staff Nurse in the Emergency Department consistently delivers safe, compassionate care, leads shifts effectively, supports staff development, drives improvements in patient outcomes, and contributes positively to the culture and performance of the department

Job Purpose

This role operates across a range of clinical areas within the acute and community services. You will plan and deliver an effective and competent level of care, be fully aware of the needs of the patients and drive the standard in patient care.

Working collaboratively with colleagues across other department to ensure the continuity in patient care, acting as a role model for colleuges, patients and relatives. Supervise the care given by Healthcare Assistants and provide guidance and training as appropriate.

• The post holder will maintain accurate patient documentation and produce high quality patient information.

Qualifications

Essential:

• 1'st Level Registered Nurse with NMC Registration

Desirable:

• In possession of or commitment to work towards a level 2 vocational award in health and social care. 
• Teaching and Mentorship qualification
• Paediatric and mental health competency

Knowledge

Essential: 

• 3 Years Post qualification experience working across Emergency and acute care.
• Thorough knowledge of NMC Code (2018)
