Job Overview

To provide a range of appropriate social and leisure activities for inpatients with a range of physical and mental health conditions. The programme is primarily based in the inpatient area/ward, although the post holder may be involved in some day trips and visits.

Job Specific Outcomes 1 of 2

Assist in the screening and selection of patients to identify how they may participate in social activities. 2. Promote appropriate activities (individual and group based) to meet the needs of the patients to develop and increase independent functioning and to help integrate patients into personal, social, domestic vocational and community environments. 3. Involve patients in activities of daily living that aim to promote their independence, and physical mental wellbeing. 4. Participate in team meetings as required by the line manager, to report on patient’s progress, including the provision of written reports and documentation in ward records to communicate work undertaken to other team members. 5. Maintain statistical records of patient attendance, stock, social activity programmes and other relevant information. 6. Communicate the activity timetable by displaying posters to create and enhance the weekly social events. 7. Assist in ensuring the maintenance of any equipment, materials and other resources to ensure the service is adequately stocked and in accordance with Health and Safety policies

Qualifications

1. Educated to GCSE of equivalent.

2. Previous experience of working in a health or social care setting (e.g. health/Social Care assistant) and be trained up to NVQ3 standard. Additional on-job and formal training is provided to maintain and improve knowledge in the specific speciality area in which the post holder is based.

General skills / attributes

As the job requires working unsupervised for most of the time it is necessary for strong levels of self motivation to be evident. A level of maturity and discretion gained from previous experience in care settings, that will enable the post holder to relate to patients and to plan and carry out suitably planned and other appropriate social activities to benefit the patient is necessary.

Evidence of the ability to organise workloads, time manage, prioritise and work independently is required. The post holder must be able to confidently relate to other members of the ward team and maintain confidentiality at all times. 

The post holder must exhibit motivational communication and diplomacy skills at the highest level in a sympathetic manger in order to encourage patients to participate in the social activities. The ability to express themselves clearly both verbally and in writing is essential.

The post holder must be a car driver and possess a current and clean driving licence. Knowledge of IT is required to enable the post holder to produce leaflets, posters, timetables and paper activities, quizzes as well as clinical record keeping
