Job Overview

We are delighted to offer a Fixed term Surgical Staff Grade position for 12 months in Jersey. 

 

The holder will work with other medical and nursing staff to provide a broad range of elective and emergency surgical and medical care to patients in Jersey covering Colorectal, Bariatric, Upper GI, Vascular and Breast surgical specialities, as well as participation in an Emergency Surgery service. The post holder would also need to be competent in basic urological emergencies.

 

These posts provide an excellent opportunity for those wishing to gain further surgical skills and knowledge while working in a UK style medical system.

 

Surgical Staff Grades and Associate Specialists provide Emergency out of hour’s on-call together with a named Consultant. On-call is non-resident and is supported by a F1 or F2 resident doctor.

Duties

The post holder will work across the range of general surgery. Surgical fellows will work with Consultants and Associate Specialists providing inpatient and outpatient based care.

 

This will involve working in Emergency, Colorectal, Bariatric, Upper GI, Vascular and Breast surgical specialities. Where there are gaps in knowledge or experience within these, focussed support and training will be available.

 

The rota operates with prospective cover amongst the Middle Grades. The post holder will be expected to work with other Middle Grades in providing an emergency on call service.

 

The post holder will be expected to attend outpatient clinics, operating theatres and perform ward rounds. The majority of the day time work will be covering the above specialties however there is also a proportion of general surgical practice especially on call and involves covering urological emergencies, with the support of a consultant urologist.

 

Administration, audit and activities will also be undertaken. Specific duties and time-tabling will be subject to an annual Job-plan review. As a rough guide this post will have 2-3 clinics, 2-3 theatre sessions, 1 SPA, 1 Admin session and Ward round commitments. 

 

Off-Island Specialist services Transfers to the mainland by air ambulance occur regularly, and on occasion out of hours. The post holder may rarely be requested to take part in such transfers, subject to holding the necessary qualifications. The main involvement in transferring patients to the UK involves communication and liaison and not having to physically transfer the patient.

Suggested Timetable

The post is 10 + 4 PA contract which includes 1 SPA. The final job plan will be agreed with the Clinical lead, Chief of Service, and ratified by the Group Medical Director. The post holder’s job plan will be reviewed annually and will be appraised according to the current guidance. An illustrative timetable is shown below:

The Speciality

 

 

The post holder will work closely within the Department of General Surgery which provides a complete general Surgical Service

 

Emergency, Out-patient and Elective General (Upper GI and Colorectal) Surgery

 

Emergency, Screening, Out-Patient and Elective Breast Surgery Service

 

Vascular Out-patient and Day Surgery Service.

 

The department has a suite of offices for Consultants, SAS Doctors, Secretaries, Nursing and Secretarial Support.

 

The hospital has a main theatre department comprising 4 operating theatres. There is a dedicated Day Surgery Unit which provides two further operating theatres. All theatres are equipped to a high standard and 2 main theatres have ultra-clean air-flow systems. There is a dedicated Endoscopy Unit and extensive out-patient facilities. The department uses one dedicated ward for General Surgery and Urology with some female patients also admitted to the combined ward with Gynaecology.

 

There is a dedicated breast clinical oncology unit which is located adjacent to the Breast Screening and Diagnostic Imaging Unit. Two Radiologists share the Breast Imaging Service, which is particularly well equipped and includes both screening and symptomatic patients.

 

There is a dedicated Endoscopy Unit and extensive Out-patient facilities.
