Trustee to the Jersey Ecology Fund

What is the Jersey Ecology Fund?

The Jersey Ecology Fund or the Ecology Trust Fund as it is known publicly was established by the States of Jersey in March 1991 using funds received from an insurance settlement relating to the 1978 Amoco Cadiz oil tanker disaster.

The Fund's capital is invested by the Government of Jersey Treasury, generating income that supports environmental initiatives across the Island. The level of annual income available for distribution varies according to investment returns and interest rates.

Grants awarded through the Fund have supported a wide range of environmental projects, with funding ranging from £100 to several thousand pounds. For further information about the Fund and its activities, please visit the Government of Jersey's Ecology Trust Fund webpage.

What Does a Trustee Do?

The Jersey Ecology Fund has four trustees and a Chair (who is a member of the States Assembly and is appointed by the Minister for the Environment).

Trustees play a vital role in overseeing the Fund's activities, ensuring that its resources are managed effectively and that grants are awarded to projects that support the Fund's environmental objectives.

Key responsibilities and commitments include:

• Reviewing and assessing applications for funding and contributing to decisions on grant awards.
• Serving on a voluntary basis for an initial term of three years. Currently, Trustees may be reappointed for additional terms, up to a maximum of three consecutive terms (nine years in total).
• Attending quarterly trustee meetings, which are usually held at 4:00 pm on a Wednesday and typically last no more than two hours.
• Participating, where required, in meetings with applicants, site visits to funded projects, and relevant events or functions. This additional commitment is occasional and is estimated at up to six hours per year.
• Meeting dates are scheduled in advance for the year ahead, although arrangements may occasionally be amended to accommodate the Chair's States-related commitments.

Remuneration

The role of Trustee is voluntary. No remuneration or expenses are payable for carrying out trustee duties. This position offers a rewarding opportunity to contribute to the protection and enhancement of Jersey's natural environment while supporting impactful community-led or student/research environmental projects.

Desirable Qualities for a Trustee

The Fund welcomes applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds, skills, and experience who share a strong commitment to the protection and enhancement of Jersey's environment.

No specific professional qualifications are required. Applications are encouraged from individuals who can demonstrate relevant knowledge, skills, experience, and a commitment to the Fund's aims.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate the following:

Commitment to Environmental Objectives
A clear interest in, and commitment to, environmental issues and the Fund's charitable purposes.

Knowledge and Experience
Broad knowledge and interest of environmental matters, gained through professional experience, voluntary involvement, academic study, or other relevant participation. 

Decision-Making and Judgement
The ability to assess grant applications and projects objectively, evaluate their merits, and make decisions in accordance with agreed policies and criteria. Appropriate guidance and support will be provided.

Collaborative Working
The ability to contribute constructively to panel discussions and work effectively with fellow trustees to reach balanced and informed decisions.

Financial Awareness
Experience of financial management, budgeting, accounting, or financial oversight would be beneficial, although it is not essential
