Their future, our future, enable your future

Jersey is committed to ensuring the provision of high-quality education for our young people; an education offering that makes us proud as an Island.

To achieve this, we recognise that the commitment needs to be for the long-term, which is why we are making significant investment to train more teachers.

Apply to become a teacher

Islanders that wish to be our future teachers have three different ways to make this happen. Each route is designed to suit different life points, circumstances and learning styles. If you have a degree and a desire to teach, we have a pathway to make your desire a reality – you can see our routes below.

From September 2025 onwards, all the available pathways are taken in conjunction with a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) awarded by the University of Sussex. This will enable all successful graduate teachers who completed the programme in July 2026 and beyond to apply for QTS in England as well as JQTS in Jersey.

We recruit for the Jersey Graduate Teacher Training Programme (including the PGCE) each January, to enable locally qualified students to start their training in September.

Student bursary - shortage subjects

Finance: Bursary grant of £25,000

+

Job information

  • Duration: September to July
  • Student tuition fees: Paid by the Government of Jersey
  • Finance: Bursary grant of £25,000, non-taxable
  • Level: Secondary and Further Education only
Our students studying with a bursary for shortage subjects have the opportunity to combine study and practical learning. You will start gradually with a few hours a week supervised teaching, slowly building to 50% during the Spring term, split between two placements. Trainees will be working towards a PGCE in Pedagogy and practice, awarded by the University of Sussex, and Jersey Qualified Teacher Status.

Professional Studies takes place one morning per week during term time and are adjusted for those on a part-time route.

As a trainee teacher, you will be allocated to a department in two contrasting schools for a major and minor placement. You will train alongside an experienced teacher (your subject Mentor) in each school. You will shadow them and gradually learn to teach their classes.

Your shortage subject does not necessarily have to be your degree subject. There is opportunity for a subject knowledge enhancement course for those with A-Levels of shortage subjects, which gives the chance to teach your subject of passion. Our shortage subjects between 2024 and 2026 are Mathematics, Science and English. A number of other subjects will be published each January, confirming the shortage subjects that are open for applications that year.

Quote

Why teach?

"I moved to teaching from finance because I wanted to make a difference and have a greater sense of personal fulfilment every day."

Why Jersey?

"I was not able to uproot my family and train in the UK so the chance to train here on the Island, and to continue my home life with my three young children, has been an amazing opportunity.

I became aware that English was a shortage subject. With an A Level in that subject on top of my Music degree I have been able to qualify as a teacher in both subjects and upgrade my English teaching knowledge with a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course."
