Job Overview

To work alongside the Dispensary Manager to co-ordinate the dispensing process and provision of advice to patients and carers, in order to support the provision of a high quality, cost effective and efficient patient centred pharmacy service within Health and Community Services. To supervise staff working within the dispensary, including assistants, trainee pharmacy technicians and trainee pharmacy assistants.

Statutory Responsibilities

  • The postholder will have to comply with all relevant States Laws, such as the Health and Safety at Work (Jersey) Law 1989 and any other associated legislation, Standing Orders, Financial Directions, and other relevant Codes of Practice, in respect of managing the key project deliverables of programmes and costs through the active management of procurement, approval, financial and administrative procedures.

Job Specific Outcomes 1 of 2

  1. Work under the overall leadership of the Dispensary Manager to deliver an efficient, high quality, professional and well-coordinated dispensary service that meets all statutory and regulatory requirements. Deputising for the Dispensary Manager operationally when they are away from the department.
  2. Accurately dispense prescriptions and undertake final accuracy checks of prescriptions dispensed by others, to maximise the safe and appropriate dispensing of medicines to patients. This will use the knowledge and skills gained in an ACPT qualification
  3. Provide comprehensive advice and counselling to patients to ensure that they fully understand the intended medicine regimen, that any patient adherence issues are clearly raised with them, so that patients can obtain maximum benefit from prescribed treatment.
  4. Performance manage direct reports, assess the competency of staff within the dispensary and assist in the training of newly recruited pharmacy technicians and all other dispensary and reception-based staff. Support the Chief Pharmacy Technician – Education, Training & Compliance in the training, mentoring and development of Trainee Pharmacy Technicians in all aspects relating to dispensary.
  5. To lead on specific projects related to the dispensary service as identified by the Dispensary Manager, collect, and analyse data required to monitor and evaluate the impact and performance of the technical dispensary service (including reception) in order to inform practice and service improvement.

  1. Participate in the review, development, implementation and audit of policies, procedures and guidelines relating to the delivery of Dispensary and Reception Services to patients and ward staff
  2. Produce reports, using the electronic systems in use in the department, to support delivery of the role, and development of the service.
  3. Report and assist in the investigation of incidents and errors liaising with the Dispensary Manager and those concerned where necessary. Support with implementation of changes to practice/process and/or provide training support.
  4. Undertake stock reviews and ensure that medicines are kept safe and secure in line with regulations and procedures.
  5. Manage the supply of Controlled Drugs ensuring legal requirements are met and conduct regular CD stock and record checks. Assist the Chief Pharmacy Technician – Education, Training & Compliance with CD Audits for wards.
  6. Liaise with services on matters relating to contracted supply of medicines including Clozapine Patient Monitoring, Drug & Alcohol and Mental Health services.
  7. Working with the Dispensary Manager, manage the dispensary rota, co-ordinating and prioritising the dispensary workload to ensure service delivery and turnaround times are maintained

Person specification

Essential Qualifications -

  • BTEC / NVQ/ SVQ level 3 in Pharmaceutical Sciences, or National Certificate in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent.
  • Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council of Great Britain.
  • Qualified Accuracy Checking Technician (to National Standard)
  • Managerial/Leadership qualification or equivalent experience of managing and leading/supervising a team

Desirable Qualification

  • Educational Supervisor/ NVQ workplace assessor certificate

Knowledge Requirements

  • Expertise as a qualified Pharmacy Technician within specialism, underpinned by theory.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical technical procedures acquired through training.
  • Extensive knowledge of checking dispensed prescriptions and supervising a technical area within the pharmacy.
  • Up to date knowledge of national guidelines and legislation relating to medicines use and pharmacy practice.
  • Good understanding of clinical governance, medication incidents and risk management.
  • Practical knowledge of maintaining records according to confidentiality and data protection protocols.

Technical / Work-based Skills

  •  Able to demonstrate a range of information technology skills i.e. an ability to effectively use IT equipment and role critical software.
  • Previous experience of using Wellsky, TMS & Automated dispensing systems

  • Extensive Previous Pharmacy, ideally within the hospital setting
  • Experience of working effectively within a multidisciplinary team and supervising staff.
  • Assessment, facilitation and tutoring of pharmacy staff.
  • Patient counselling skills
  • Line Management or operational management
