Job Overview
St John's School are seeking to appoint a motivated Learning Support Assistant to join our fantastic team from the start of Summer Term 2025 (Tuesday 22nd April 2025). Motivation and enthusiasm to work with young children in school is paramount. The successful candidate will be child-centred and be fully committed to inclusive education, where children are able to thrive.
Job Purpose
To work with our teachers as part of a professional team to support teaching and learning for all pupils, including those with an SEND. To provide learning support to pupils who need particular help to overcome barriers to learning, such as those with learning difficulties. To add value to teaching and learning opportunities planned and directed by the teacher which will support the development of independent learning skills associated with improved learning outcomes.

- Provide either 1:1 or small group support to pupils with special educational needs
-Support learning activities for individuals and groups of pupils under the professional direction and supervision of a qualified teacher, differentiating and adapting learning programmes to suit the needs of allocated pupils
-Understand and support independent learning and inclusion of all pupils as required
-Contribute to the feedback provided to pupils in relation to attainment and progress under the guidance of a teacher
-Implement planned learning activities as agreed with the teacher, adjusting activities according to pupils’ responses as appropriate or adapt to suit a small group
-Support pupils in social and emotional well-being, reporting concerns to the teacher as appropriate, in line with Safeguarding policies and procedures
-Assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson times, including lunchtimes and on school trips - ensuring that all needs are met
-Follow all intimate care plans and safer handling plans
Qualifications
ESSENTIAL | DESIRABLE |
Numeracy and literacy skills equivalent to Level 2 NVQ / CACHE level 2 or equivalent in childcare / care, or commitment to work towards obtaining. EPI pen training. Commitment to undertake First Aid and Level 1 Safeguarding training. |
Foundations in Sensory Processing, MAYBO and Trauma & Attachment training. |
Knowledge
ESSENTIAL |
Child Protection training. Awareness of confidentiality and data protection principles. Full working knowledge of relevant policies, codes of practice and awareness of relevant legislation. Working knowledge of curriculum and other relevant learning programmes / strategies. Knowledge of child development and learning. |
Experience
ESSENTIAL |
Experience of working with or caring for pupils/ pupils of relevant age or 2 years’ experience of working with pupils. |
