Job Purpose

The Immunisation Nurse works as a member of the Immunisation Team, delivering vaccine programmes within community and educational settings, and in accordance with the Department of Health Green Book against Immunisation, working closely with the vaccination team, school staff and other partners.

The focus of the role is to promote and support the health of children, young people and adults through immunisations, to deliver and develop a specialist service by the provision of advice within a multidisciplinary framework.

This will involve developing and maintaining a high clinical profile and presence by acting as role model for other nursing staff, and also, to support Vaccination Manager with the health promotion, health education and delivery of immunisation programmes.

The post holder will demonstrate vision and provide professional support to the Vaccination Manager and the vaccination team for the specialised service. The post holder will be a highly experienced practitioner within the multi-disciplinary team and will contribute to the development of a clinical service through involvement in standard setting and the development and dissemination of expertise within both the clinical and education settings. The post holder will also ensure they maintain an awareness of developments in clinical and nursing practice generally towards CPD.

• Provide safe delivery of a quality immunisations service

• Each clinician has a responsibility to ensure that they remain clinically competent to undertake their role

Communication

The Immunisation Nurse will communicate effectively with other team members, parents, carers, school staff and other internal and external stakeholders and partners

• Promote and deliver immunisation programmes, along with the immunisation team. This will include being able to assess children, young people and adults and understand the pre-requisites of giving an immunisation, understanding the contra-indications and the aftercare

• Work with the immunisation team, school staff and other internal and external stakeholders and partners

• The post holder will work collaboratively as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, taking the lead role when appropriate and participate in building team commitment, coherence and spirit Management of risk

• Ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs

• Ensure use of appropriate transport and storage of items, maintaining cold chain and other procedures Learning and Development

• Undertake all mandatory and statutory training requirements

• Be responsible for own learning needs and continuing professional development

Qualifications

RN (NMC registered) – adult or child branch, active on NMC register

Evidence of continuous personal and professional development and willingness to commit to ongoing CPD

Understanding the principles of consent, and an understanding of and willingness to undertake Gillick Competency Assessment as necessary.

Knowledge

To take into account risk and its effective management e.g. consent, side effects

• Take responsibility for CPD and keep up to date with current practices and research-led developments

• To read and understand the relevant PGD, Immunisation Green Book and understand storage and transport instructions for immunisations by maintaining the cold chain

• To observe infection control procedures

• Identify risks/clinical incidents following policy and informing line manager

General Skills/Attributes

Flexible approach to working – must be able to work in different locations or occasional unsocial hours as required

• Must hold a Jersey driving license and have access to a car that can be used for business purposes

• Ability to work in a variety of settings

• The post holder will disseminate clinical knowledge and expertise in specialty throughout organisation using the principles of teaching and learning in the education of clients, carers and colleagues

• Support the Vaccination Manager with his/her clinical duties as requested

• The post holder will participate constructively in the Performance Review and Appraisal process, taking responsibility for lifelong learning

• The post holder is required to take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work

• The post holder is also required to cooperate with their employing body to ensure that statutory and departmental regulations are adhered to.

General skills / attributes

Computer literate

• Ability to prioritise work effectively

• Able to demonstrate effective teaching strategies • Knowledge of child protection procedures

• Ability to deliver immunisation schedules and programmes according to schedules provided by the Vaccination Manager

• Practical skills and knowledge of cold chain procedures and medicine management

Support and participate in shared learning and networking across other immunisation teams

• This role will be required to work across different locations; You will be required to have a Jersey driving license and access to a car that can be used for business purposes

• To liaise appropriately with other members of primary health care in order to provide a coordinated service for the community.

• To maintain secure records and provide information on a need-to-know basis for data protection purposes

• To maintain regular contact with the Vaccination Manager, other Nurses and the child health team

• To support other health professionals delivering vaccination programmes

Experience

Experience of working in a community setting and/or working with children, young people and adults. Able to demonstrate team working Experience of immunisations and medicines management.

• Highly experienced professional within the multidisciplinary team

• Knowledgeable in the assessment of individuals suitable for immunisation

• To undertake Gillick Competency Assessment for relevant young person according to HCS policy, advise and immunise these YP accordingly, in order to ensure that they are protected in a timely manner

• Contribute to the identification and protection of children at risk of abuse and act in accordance with local Safeguarding Children’s Board guidelines

• Contribute to the identification and immunisation of home-schooled children and alternative curriculum settings

• Assist in the planning, delivery and evaluation of health promotion/education and public health activities related to immunisation campaigns, in conjunction with the Vaccination Manager

• To work autonomously and as part of a team as necessary
