Job Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Mutual Legal Assistance team at the Law Officers’ Department in Jersey. You will work in a team with three other Legal Advisers, two Assistant Legal Advisers and an experienced ex-policeman who operates as an MLA Liaison Officer. The focus of the work is assisting in criminal and civil asset recovery investigations and proceedings taking place in other jurisdictions worldwide or, conversely seeking the assistance of other jurisdictions worldwide in the context of local investigations and proceedings. This includes complex evidence gathering and asset recovery work both locally and inter-jurisdictionally. An ability to work with diverse jurisdictions and agencies at the very highest level is essential.

Job Purpose

You will provide advice and give comprehensive legal guidance in mainly, although not exclusively, low risk MLA (including civil asset recovery) matters.
The work will be interesting, challenging and varied, working with different Government agencies and overseas Courts and agencies. You will have the support of a friendly, inclusive, and highly professional team at the Law Officers’ Department, under the ultimate leadership
of the Attorney General for Jersey.

Qualifications

Professional legal qualification required:
Jersey Solicitor or Advocate, Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales,
Called to the degree of the Utter Bar of one of the Inns of Court of England and Wales, Member of the Faculty of Advocates or as a Solicitor in Scotland,
Called to the Bar of Northern Ireland or as a Solicitor of the Court of Judicature of Northern Ireland,
Called to the Bar of Guernse

Knowledge

The post holder will:
- have the ability to present a point of view convincingly and persuasively through rational argument.
- be able to engage effectively with clients, counsel and other experts on a regular basis at all levels of seniority;
- be able to demonstrate a willingness to stay abreast of current developments in legal practice, and be able to develop a thorough knowledge of Jersey laws and Jersey Court procedures;
- have the ability to interact effectively with colleagues, managers and other relevant stakeholders to maintain an understanding of a wide range of related activities;
- have the ability to work effectively in a team of lawyers to achieve high levels of professional and technical standards, with the ability to supervise the work and provide support to more junior colleagues
